Hey guys I have a sj80 (yes I'm one of them coily owners) my fuel gauge only reads a quarter all day everyday day, my tank has copped a hiding and the gauge won't read past quarter, I'm just wondering if I leafy tank will fit in and if the sender unit will be the same as it sucks not having a fuel gauge. Cheers for any help. |

english? lol when the gauge syas "empty'is it empty? thats all that really matters, if you fill it with 40 litres you know its full, as long as it lets you know its low is all that matters. pretty sure any sierra tank will fit. and throw a new sender in it when you put a new tank in and that should sort out the drama. you can fiddle with the old sender, but a new one cost fark all so i would just do that, unless the second hand tank you get has decent sender in it. |

i should elaborate, any wide track tank will fit. narrow track wont, even though a nt tank is better as it has a bung in the bottom of it. |

just look for a whole w/t tank, if yours has copped a flogging, wont cost to much. and just rely on your trip odometer till than, fill up every 290-300km. |

NT tank is identical to WT tank except for the NT bung as mentioned and NT has one less small hose fitting on top. Senders are identical and I believe coily is same. I just sold a coily tank I should have checked the sender unit first... I run an NT tank in my WT and it was only a matter of a T piece to add the extra hose. |

yeah i need to chase a tank as well mine really has seen better days, bluesuzy gave me one though had a mate need a tank so gave it to him as my car was still off the road now that its back on road i realized how bad mine really is. cheers for all the hekp will try and chase a good wide track tank |

i have a sender. Unsure if ok. There is a writeup on how to fix them somewhere on here. (on my phone atm sorry) Tank, find another coily tank. Good for efi later. Is yours efi now? Cant remenber. |

Disagree. Having a correct fuel gauge is paramount to knowing the distances you have left to the nearest fuel station. Also in an efi application knowing you stills have fuel in ya tank means ya won't run ya fuel pump dry. Looking at how many k's ya have left is worthless on a long trail where ya car uses a lot more fuel then distance traveled on ya odometer. |

Looking at how many k's ya have left is worthless on a long trail where ya car uses a lot more fuel then distance traveled on ya odometer. anyone with basic math skill can work it out, hardcore offroad add 20% fuel usage, if in doubt of mathmatical ability, throw in a gerry, not many places any of us are more than 150km from the nearest fuel stop. look how far we made it on the red lilly adventure when i blew 4 fuses thus no dash instruments. no one should run out of fuel on any normal trip, thats just piss poor planning that no amount of gauges will fix. |

20% specifically? Ya get stuck a little bit more then usual, ya need high revs, it pisses down rain. Ya 80% throttle for an hour trying to get out of a very hard and now wet section of 20km track. It's gonna fuck ya 20% in the bum. A working fuel gauge is paramount. Especially with larger tyres that destroys it even more. Red lily was relatively easy with constant revs and a few browning moments. |

Red lily was relatively easy with constant revs and a few browning moments. red lilly was 2 hrs 30 minutes first and second gear lowrange, pissing down rain, slipping high revs in mud, towing a fully laiden boat. ya piss pot forgetful head. like i said, prior preperation prevents piss poor performance. i can work out exactly how much fuel i need and will use in every situation and can plan accordingly, thus the 80liter tank and the 2x20 litre gerries i have on the vehicle at all times. unless its a fuel gauge that tells you how many litres average you are using per 100km and how many kms you have left, its already a secondry gauge, secondry to what your calculations and intiment knowledge of your vehicles fuel usuage under all conditions should be, that should be the priority gauge. considering this bloke lives in sydney, i doubt its his biggest concern. |

You are just a fuel tank ninja. I still disagree. Knowing ya quantity on a working Correctly fuel gauge still gives ya more accuracy over how many k's have left pending the situation your in. Ps. I remember. It wasn't slippery till it started raining @ red lily

what about the 12 or so km of wet mud sludge that it pinged threw straight after jim jim road turn off well before it started raining that night? and the above scenario how will a gauge help you out? go get more fuel thatya havent packed while you get out of a bog? if its hasnt been prepared for the car shouldnt have left the driveway if it had the potential to get that epic, especailly up here at this time of year. advising him to use his odometer probably isnt sound advice, but if you know your car its all good in the hood. 35000 km since june, a lot of that offraod on isolated long journey, i have it down to an art.

not sure how this got to fuel economy, but anyway. sogone, i think i'm about to have sex with my car  
i know my max & min fuel usage figures & know where the 60L used mark is on my guage (66L tank) it's handy to have, the only time i've ever run out of fuel, is chasing the needle way past the middle point on the E & it stopped cause i parked it on a funny angle.. |

Yeah. But I agree 'Tari. Ya need a gauge that reads true so you can work out ya current fuel economy to situation. But I better start agreeing with Joel or he won't let me play captain on his boat anymore
