Post subject:  stalling when driving ( coming up to a stop etc )

hello,

i'll try explaining as best i can so please bear with me.

ps: i have searched a few times to see if anyones had anything similar and a few things did come up that i have tried but so far no luck.

ok, so it's a 1985 Sierra 1.3 5spd all stock and what's happening is the car drives fine, idles fine when first started/warmed up but.... as soon as you drive the car and come up to say some lights a corner, slow down etc, the car stalls/doesnt want to idle. re-start the car and it fires up straight away ( almost ) every time then it'll idle properly but, again, when you drive it it'll want to stall/stall when stopping??

so far i have checked/replaced fuel filter, cleaned the carb ( spray carbie cleaner ), new rotor button, replaced leads and plugs, put a fuel cleaner/water disperser in the tank and have done the back fire technique but none have fixed it??

oh, also, the speedo seems to now bounce when driving??

earthing issue maybe??

any other ideas that i might be able to check. it will be going to a mechanic next week after xmas but i wanted to try and have a go myself

cheers
Chris

speedo bounce sounds like a sticking cable or one about to break. pull it out and lubricate it.

stalling could be due to the auto choke not dissengaging properly.

Tacho jumping?
Check your coil terminals.

Float / needle and seat sticking maybe.
Or set to high.

The fuel bowl is over full, and floods when stopping?

I'm afraid I can't suggest anything as to how to fix your problem but I had this issue for a brief time after I finished rebuilding the carby on my 95 sierra.

It would idle fine and then I would pull up and it would die. But it went away by itself shortly after it started happening. Then instead of not wanting to idle while warm and running, it did a 180 and decided it was not going to idle when starting up and cold, I fixed that but can't actually suggest anything as to how to solve your issue :S

sorry

i will check al the suggestions above but after bit more searching it seems it "could" be the auto choke?? will have to have a look when i get home.

thanks again guys

Okay, I've tried smothering the carby, swapping the leads and backfiring, new fuel pump and filter plus a carby spray clean, i've also tried holding open the auto chock plus what i've said above and it still stalls at the intersections/stopping. It idles fine once its restarted, it just wont idle when driving. Where are the idle jets and how else can i clean them?

Does anyone else have an idea on what else it could be?

hey mate mine did it for ages when i put all the vacume lines on in the wrong spots. It might be worth checking them for for cracks or holes

Could be a brake booster giving it a miss when the brakes are applied?

ok, sorry, hadn't updated but i've removed the original carby and replaced it with a weber i had lying around off one of my escort motors so i chucked it on after putting a kit through it and no more stalling. not sure whats up with the original carb yet as i havent pulled it down. i might do that one day soon and see if i can see what might have been causing it.

cheers
Chris
