hey guys, after a quick ride in gwagensteves rig it has got me thinking about line locks. i would like to fit them to my sierra however i only have drum rears and i am dubious on their capability, however i feel if i put them on the front when i am facing up hill (most likely to be using it) i will slide back as its only my upper wheels holding. what are peoples thoughts and experiences with them? |

What is wrong with your hand brake ? Line locks are only as good as your brakes are, so if your brakes are stuffed fitting line locks wont improve them. |

I was thinking more of when stopping and trying to get going on steep hills ie to give you a bit more control similar to a handbrake start but with a finger instead etc rather than replacing my handbrake with it. My brakes arent stuffed theyre fine its more of control thing than anything |

when you do a handbrake start on a hill you dont NEED to take the handbrake off... in a short uphill at low speed its often easier to just drive up with the handbrake on and take it off once you're in the clear. sure its not great for the brakes but meh, it works and saves you riding the clutch or dumping it. |

Bluesuzy is on the money. So long as the transfer case is still in 4WD, applying the line lock to the front wheels will also lock the back because you're in 4WD the front axle can't rotate without the rear axle rotating. You might have to stand on the pedal pretty hard, but it will work. Hop that makes sense. Obviously, if you are on 2WD then you'll only lock the front wheels. Mine is on the rear only because I have a rear disconnect and can use the line lock to do burns. Steve. |

For steep hill starts in my old Sierra, I used a hand throttle and stock hand brake. Which was much better after a rear disc conversion. I'm sure an idle up switch could be rigged to the carby, too. |

If your hand brake is good enough then that's great, but they often aren't. I like the flexibility of use my line lock gives me - the fingertip control is sweet. I don't have to yank on a lever - in fact, I can even pre-engage it as they work like a one way valve - flip it on, drive up to where I wanted to be, hit the brake, and that's where it stays. I think it's one of the those things you need to have and play with to see the full benefit of. I don't think I could be without one in a manual car now. Steve. |

Alright thanks guys yh didnt think of it locking all 4 haha its so obvious now haha Yh that would rape your brakes leaving the hanbrake on all the time. I guess for short stints it wouldnt be too bad Maybe a rear disc conversion is in order.. Haha oh so blue suzy meant with the line lock on leave it in gear to engage the whole driveline? Ok sorry mate i thought you just meant leave it in gear to hold the car and dont have line locks. Sorry the internet is so hard to judge tone, i thought you were having a dig sorry mate. |

I read it as parking onroad as you didnt specify when you wanted it on. Leaveing it in gear to stop it from rolling. I edited it last night but my laptop died while editing, so i went to sleep 
I didn't have a handbrake for 3 years. You just don't need it.(except for roadworthyness) |

brah Does with me. Get severe leg and feet cramps, with doing that, and left foot braking. Hence the hand throttle. Got auto now, lifes much better

I couldn't heel and toe fast enough to be comfortable on big sketchy climbs, and coming out of 10 years in an auto, I really wanted to regain some of the hill holding ability of an auto. Heel and toe 10 times and at least once you'll roll back. With the line lock I never roll back. Regardless of how steep the hill is. 121:1 gearing helps, but remember I have approximately zero off idle torque with the 660. Steve. |
