in the last pic where the tailshaft ends is the end of the g/box another 40cm after that is the shifter 8O on some weird mechanism

yep. LJ run a similar setup. but the mechanisim is built into the body.

Jimnys i believe have a remote shift linkage

The "Dump Pipe" is the Cat Converter. Turns Cats into harmless gases.

cap engine and gear box i presume?

we had a couple of goes trying to run the cap box in my old sierra with verying levels of success.

you can unbolt the 'extension' part of the box, and this will reveal the shift rails just like in a sierra box. you then need to build a new cover for the top of the box and come up with a shifter.

if that's unclear, i can probably take some photos of my old one in the shed.

the simplest and best solution is to find a gearbox out of an F6A engined jimny, but these are not going to be very common. that will get you a slower first gear for better crawling, and it will put the shifter in the right spot.

re the dump pipe - build your own. we ran a 2.25" exhaust with a cat out of a commodoore.
