Post subject:  fuel guage funny business
I put a vitara g16b fuel tank in were my old sierra one was because it had the efi pump, so I hooked it up and the fuel gauge was working fine but after a little test drive smoke poured out of my cluster. Opened it up and its obvious the fuel gauge burnt out and it was very Warm and discoloured.
this knocked out the temp gauge as well. So I guess my question is can I use the vitara fuel gauge sender to a sierra gauge?

Edit : This is my edit that didnt go thru when i posted the above joke originally...
I think it sounds like an electrical fault, or possibly a short somewhere, maybe check the wiring and or see if anything has melted or burnt...

efi vit tank's should have 2 plug's..

1. pump supply... 2 wire's
12v supply
& earth

2. sender... again 2 wire's
low voltage through the gauge
& a earth return through a peteniomitor..

Sound's like you have a wire or 2 the wrong way.... as I have a Vit SWB EFI tank in my sierra & all is well... in the land of gauge...

It was a joke... i did edit my orignal post to add, that i think it sounds like an electrical fault, or possibly a short somewhere, but i can see now, it didnt add my edit... :roll:

what was the gauge reading when it died? If it was anything under over full I would think it was a fault in the gauge or voltage regulator rather than the sender or wiring.

about half a tank was the reading, i then noticed no reading then went high then smoke haha, im gonna remount the vitara fuel tank anyway so ill see if i can slip the sierra gauge sender in its place. been away so late reply :)

its clearly burnt out, im an electrician and i know its been getting too much current.
