I am just wondering other than air filter and spark plugs is there anything i can replace / clean to get a bit more power out of my vitara
It has nearly 300000 klms on the clock but doesnt use a scrap of oil or anything but it seems low on power

Some cheaper things you can do are, change the fuel filter, its often overlooked, and can become very clogged up... run some fuel system cleaner additive thru it regularly, and if you havnt already, switch to 95RON/Premuim Unleaded... and on the expensive things you can do... extractors and a sports exhaust, with hi flow cat... but maybe you dont want to spend that much on a engine with 300K on it... if the engine was fine, and i planned on keeping the zook, i know i would, hehe...

a 300,000km vitara prolly wants a rebuild on the engine... not cheap though!

If it aint broke, dont F#@k with it, hehe... just keep driving it until something does go wrong, then get it fixed, or rebuilt !

Before you spent a cent on it I'd get a compression test and leak down. At least then you'd know if it's worth spending money on other stuff or if it's down on power because it's blowing compression somewhere.
If compression/leakdown check out in spec, then:
Oxygen sensor/s - These are really only good for 100,000km (this won't restore power but should improve performance at under 80% throttle.)
Catalytic converter - This is likely to be fouled at least a bit.
Plugs
Coil packs - (I think these are troublesome in H motors?)
Check the timing hasn't wandered. If the timing has slipped back a bit that would cause some general "lost power"
There's little else that could "restore" lost power.
If the engine has borderline compression/leak down I wouldn't spend money on it - look for a H25 or H27 to replace it. Far more economical than a rebuild, and a better outcome once it's done.

thanks guys will do a compression test on it and see how that comes out i cant take it off the road as its our only car as i ride a bike.
im not after a power up like turbo etc just things that would need replacing/cleaning to restore general efficiency of the engine

You could block the emissions hole on the drivers side exhaust manifold, so the exhaust does not go back through the inlet manifold. Remove two bolts that hold it on, then slide the gasket out and make a new one (without a big hole) out of similar material and thickness. Drill new bolt holes then re-install. This will not improve power but should run more efficiently.

Reggie, how does blanking the EGR make the engine run more efficiently? (Serious question)
As I understood it, EGR is used under light throttle only, when the O2 sensor will be trimming the mixture to ensure the car is running lean anyway.
I would have thought it would make zero difference.

Hi Steve. Engines run poorly when using low octane fuel, the same applies when your air filter is clogged. This has the same effect (although smaller). The ozone will suffer the most. This information came from a mechanic who told me there is no need for it.

I think your mechanic is spinning you a yarn.
Low octane fuel or a clogged air filter will reduce overall power output (i.e at full throttle) for completely different reasons I won't go into here.
EGR will have no effect on overall power output. Floor the throttle and EGR is disabled, the O2 sensor is disregarded and the engine runs (slightly) rich. EGR is an emissions device for use under light throttle/cruise.
Actually, in an engine running properly and in good condition, NO emissions control device reduces power. That's because an engine runs at its cleanest when at full throttle.
