I run an '88 Sierra (pictured left). Would running an ethanol blend be detrimental to the engine's health?

im not sure how engine will run but if its a high ethnol content fuel replace any very old rubber fuel hoses and replace your fuel filters after a 3-4 tanks of fuel (something i picked up from the boys running e85 in their fast cars). let me know how the car runs if you try it as i would be very interested.

I have heard that the Bio fuel is not that good for carby cars... both my Dad's GQ RB30 and My mum's old 94 sierra ran rough as on the stuff... ran much better on regular 95
I might be very wrong tho!

Don't do it. E10 might be ok (but your car is unlikely to run as well) but actual "biofuel" implying E85 or pure ethanol will cause corrosion to your fuel system and degradation of all the rubber fuel parts- not just the lines, but potentially the diaphragm in the fuel pump and seals etc in the carby.
E85 compatible fuel systems are quite specialised.
Steve.

I ran my old 1967 Holden on standard E10 for a few years and it ran better than the 92 rubbish. It pinged like crazy but was beautiful on E10. This is because the Ethanol actually increases the Octane level of the fuel.
People will say that you need to modify your engine to same spec for GAS because its harder on the valve seats etc. My father made a very good point. If you're going to remove and rebuild the engine only for that reason, just use it till it needs a rebuild and do the mods then. That way you'll get that extra life out of it.
Against my mechanics recommendations, I run my Diesel van on B20 (20% Biodiesel) and have had no issues other than a injector pump but I don't think that was fuel related. I notice no difference in power or ecenomy. However, just as a side note, I did get 20~25% more k's out of a tank immediately after replacing the collapsed exhaust system with a bigger system. And thats compared to new carrying less gear than I did 7 years later.

In NSW, Unleaded is to be phased out from 1 July 2012 and only E10 will be available. 95 and 98 fuels will continue to be Ethanol-free, but nearly 20cpl more expensive.

Whats funny about that is that Freedom Fuels here (my favourite fuel supplier) used to do only Bio fuels. After a couple of years they dropped their mid rating E10 and brougt back standard unleaded because the demand was still too great. I was dissappointed to see that.

Bio-diesel goes really well in mechanical injection diesels. Common rail diesels don't like it too much, and they're expensive to fix when they stop

This is a dumb and extremly offensive thing to do... Why take away a consumers right to choice???
Yes, 'Biofuels' are nice for the environment and they keep Bob Brown and his cronies employed...
But look at the sky rocketing cost of food - especially in the third world, where they cant afford food in the first place...
Im sure the poor guy who thought of Biofuels didnt think it would lead to this... Now youve got a global food crisis because food crops are being replaced with fuel crops because it pays more.
Consequently, youve got millions of people dying each day because they cant afford food...
It pisses me right off petrol stations fer phasing out unleaded before July - And I tell them too...

But obviously over time the 2K investment will pay off. I converted my first Mazda MX5 to LPG. It cost me 1,500 GBP and took 8 months to break even on the outlay. I was 3k in the black when I sold it and emigrated here.
I calculate the $1,250 it'll cost me to convert (as $1,250 is rebated) will be paid back in four months, judging by my current mileage and fuel costs.
IMO you'd be  not to consider conversion.;

So when you replied, you knew that:
1. Barry O'Farrell is a Liberal Party Premier of NSW, and does not go much for the Greens.
2. Most Ethanol production in Australia comes from Wheat Stubble, Sugar Cane Trash, or as a by-product of Natural Gas production. Not many of these sources feed people in the Third World.
3. Service Stations (especially the person behind the counter) don't have any say in the matter. It has been dictated by the State Govt to the Fuel Distributors who then supply the Service Stations.

Most Ethanol production in Australia comes from Wheat Stubble, Sugar Cane Trash, or as a by-product of Natural Gas production. Not many of these sources feed people in the Third World. True but is causing shortages in other places like Europe3. Service Stations (especially the person behind the counter) don't have any say in the matter.
