Hello everybody...been lurking for a while trying to get info on my 95 vitara...g16b espescially.

It drank a heap of water even though the seller told me the head gasket had been replaced. In any case the engine is now fully dismantled on the bench ( once I started pulling things apart, could not stop..:)...Have only driven the car 50ks and considering..it went well.

Now the dilema...I request any advise on
1; whether it is cheaper and better to buy rebuild kits off ebay ?
2; buy a import engine, who do you recommend in the hunter, sydney region ?,
3 buy a new engine, who, where do you recommend ?
4 Best tech manual to rebuild the g16b...pulled the engine to bits, now have to learn how to put it back together.. :?

I have a maximum of $3000 to get this on the road.

I still have the brakes and wheel bearings to replace and also need to replace the throttle body as it revved at 2000 and stayed there,
Also need to replace the water piping underneath the fuel manifold as well...more than likely heaps more to do..

All help appreciated.

By the time I am finished this car I will be a forum regular.. :D

when i did my rebuild i got the place that faced my head and honed the block to provide the gasket set, if you have a good head and block id say go with the rebuild, otherwise an import motor, you have the benefit of easier access to parts then me, i required a replacement block which ended up coming from syndey (im in adelaide). on your revving issue t-body wouldnt be the first thing id think of, vac leaks?

With a 3K budget I would be boring the block, fitting new pistons, grinding the crank if needed and fit a brand new cylinder head, water pump, oil pump etc.
Would EASILY be way under $3K if you do the assembly.

Yep as shep says find the culprit of the leak this will determine the best route to take. Its not uncommon to get cracks in these blocks.

Thanks chaps...no idea where the water ended up.. :) ...obvious signs of leaking between 2-3 cylinder...leaks from left side of head gasket probably because the head bolts were very easy to undo compared to the stripped bolts on the right side...grrr...now need to find new head bolts.
Ole mate who did the head gasket before was very bodgey in his approach to workmanship. This was apparent from the way all was put back together.

Have got a quote for around $3000 for brand new long engine...would this mean reconditioned ?

Any help for my other ???"s especially in my area.

Need to get this truck up and runnin pretty quickly.

arent you better off using new head bolts when doing a head gasket any way.

replace head bolts, new head gasket and get the head decked if out off spec.

spend money on beer and mud tyres.

As I'm in Melb, my delivery was free.
Add about $100 to those prices, they went up.

You could probably get a reconned g16 for 3k it'd be less of a fuck around then and you can drop it straight in, most places give warranty too.

Cheers chep...beer...hmmm, thats why the engine is strewn all over the shed..:)

Will give em a call christover...now possibly looking for three g16b's !!!! how did you find the engines ? did you get reco or import ?

will check evil bay to see if the reco kits come with new headbolts..

Out elbow deep in the kero cleanin just in case this is a rebuild...grrr

I bought an import baleno / swift G16A efi from them.
(They have G16B's, but they were all TBI.)
I used my dead Vitara engine for its cam, dizzy, oil pick up,
sump and other add ons.
Saves a lot of money over buying a Vitara, and donks are newer, too.

Not had it driving for very long, but very happy with it.
Service was good, too, delivered to my door 2 days after ordering.

if your just staying stock do what chris has done and get a import engine and fit it your self. dome of them have warranty. youd be flat out breaking $1600 to have it in your car and running.

did it in my last vitara, the father in laws old one as well and will do it to my current one if this engine dies.

ps most of the time they crack the head around the cam welsh plugs and people say its a head gasket. they tend to go around the 270 - 300 mark

Definately get the head crack tested I had a 96 vitara for a month and a half when the head cracked. Went between the welch plug and the valve guide which seems pretty common. Ended up with brand new head, valves, springs, timing belt etc. ran like a champ after.

If you can't afford a full rebuild probably look at a new top end.

thanks everyone...whilst waiting for more info re imports etc, today I pulled the gearbox and transfer case out. All the oils looked new with no metal shavings present. Anything I need to look at whilst they are out ?

wheel bearings come out tomorrow weather permitting.

Fuel tank will be drained...is this a tank out job ?

Off to the shower...pumped 3 litres of fish oil in every nook and cranny I could find...didnt know how to pump it into the firewall though. Any special places I could have missed ?

:? ? how do you mean 'stretch bolts'. When I undid mine they seemed to be too long...maybe why the head was leaking. Is there a size information for head bolt lenght ?

A stretch bolt is as sound's, it is made to stretch while tensioning, the last 2 stage's of tension should be 90deg instead of a toque setting....
Hence my thought's they are not stretch bolt's....

hmmmm steakknife...I thought all were the same then after 1000kms you do a retension...another spanner in the works for me to think about...lol..will try and get pics happening.

may have found a engine rebuilder...however to save costs I mentioned the ebay rebuild kits for aprox $400
Anybody used these ? if so what quality could I expect ?

back in from changing the tappet cover on the bro's 16b...
Anyone know if you can buy the plastic spark plug seals for the tappet cover...just thru in o-rings until we find some...
