hey peeps, how much weight can a tintop sierra handle?
obviously using roof racks. would it handle a 50 kg kyack easily enough?

I'd think 50kgs would be toward the maximum.

From what I have seen, the base of the A pillars crack if you carry much at all. IMHO It's one of the reasons the cowl was reworked on the coil sierra to a smooth radius.

A kayak might be OK, but I'd stay away from rough roads.

Steve.

what about the light weight ladder rack that chop had on his old sierra when he did the west cost trip?

pretty sure the rear section mounted off the rear bar.

I used to cart my 30kg/4metre kayak around daily on a tin top. Even out onto the beach etc. Didn't have any issues in the ~12 months I was doing it.
Going by the above comments though, I may have been lucky.
50kg is a hell of a kayak?

My 4.5m canoe pictured above is 35kg's, being a softy i spread it across the front and rear. Held up awesome.

build one of these:

i've seen some around perth (guildford rd area)... pretty cool - the bought ones come with attachments that allow you to carry more than one as well.

I've said in another thread that my tintop has had 90kg on it. I certainly wouldn't drive onroad or at any kind of speed (like >20kph) with it, but it took it okay. That was me or my bro-in-law lying on the roof while out hunting.

No damage to anything that I could spot after several hours. That was with Rola roofracks fitted as close to the A and C pillars as possible.

I suspect from that experience that around 40kg would be fine on-road, though wind shear in a sidewind might get a bit interesting depending on the size of the kayak. Also would be keeping speed right down over corrugations.

lol i wasnt talking about the kayak, i was talking about the trailer =) you could build a basic trailer pretty easily and get it rego'd - then tow it behind anything.
