Post subject:  Question about input shaft!
Pulling apart a G16a, putting in new front and rear crankshaft seals. Have the gearbox off, noticed that the input shaft is worn as a result of a seized bearing.

It looks like this, at the end Picture

And I'm guessing it's meant to look like this instead.

Now, I don't have the time, money or expertise to replace the shaft (I'm assuming i'd have to split the box and get in there with everytihng little and lose-able to replace it.

Is there any way to fix the shaft from it's current position? Which is poking out of the bellhousing.

I am replacing the bearing that was there, too.

mines like that, I just stuck another spigot bearing in and didnt bother worrying about it anymore

A few options I have come up with/considered:

a) Don't worry about it :D
b) get a 'wider' bearing to essentially cover the worn par by a mm either side
c) get some liquid metal/etc to pad out the worn section, then place a standard bearing over it.

A seems easiest, then B. C seems like way to much effort.

I know it will make some noise when the car is in neutral without the clutch depressed, but is there anything else to worry about?

If you are really worried you can file it down so the bearing seat is uniform and then buy a slightly smaller ID spigot bearing.

Alternatively a custom sleeve is an option OR....... you could remove the shaft from the gearbox and have the spigot built up and turned back to original size.

Think about it - when the clutch is not depressed, the pressure plate is clamping the clutch plate to the flywheel - the crankshaft & flywheel, the entire clutch assembly, including the input shaft and the pilot shaft bearing are all rotating as a single unit - why would it make a noise?

Did you know that many late model cars don't even have a pilot shaft bearing? The input shaft is supported only inside the transmission.

I think four people have already said it will be fine with a new bearing - I'm number five.

Done and done. I'm not going to be 'that guy' that ignores the advice of experts.

I reckon vits all do it anyway, mine was on the original clutch and the spigot bearing wasnt seized
