Actually, the first SJ40's did not come out with rear seats. There was local demand for them, and they were a dealer fitted option. The seat itself was a locally manufactured item (by a company the usually made 3rd row seats for station wagons, etc) with "Hardware shop" bolts through the floor. As they also weren't factory fitted for rear seatbelts, part of the dealer installation was a filthy big stainless steel washer and bolt on the outside of the rear pillar (on hardtops, soft-tops weren't fitted with lap-sash belts, just lap belts).

Type 2 SJ40 (metal dash with 4wd light) was the first to offer rear seats, but only in JX trim, while Type 3 had them in all models (except traytop ute, of course!) JX had Split rear seats. JA had a Bench seat. Hard tops were cloth, soft-tops were vinyl.

Floor bolt pattern is different between Type 2 and Type 3 seats.

Is it possible to identify which type (1,2 or 3) an sj40 is just from the outside. Without looking at the dash or crawling under it. I guess I am asking if it is possible just from an external picture.

Type 1 has no plastic flares I'm pretty sure.
And type 2 & 3 are very similar except from the dash.
But you should be able to see the dash normally from a side on picture.
It's got the same dash as the 1.3 NT.
Type 3 has the plastic dash

Type 1 had completely smooth rear door, T2 and T3 had large rectangular dimple in lower half.

Type 1 never had factory FWH, just a drive flange, although AVM hubs were a dealer-fitted option.

After 33 years though, anything could have been swapped around making originality hard to determine.
