Post subject:  Stuck in muddy water
I got stuck for about 40minutes in a muddy hole, Hung up on the diffs. Then I broke my winch :)
SO anyway, got towed out by a Patrol but should I change my Dif oil.

I only just had it done about two weeks ago, but i've read that water ingresses over time, would the difs be water tight or is it for certain thats there would have been a lot of muddy water got inside?

Don't flame me for asking the obvious questions, just interested to know how diffs and oils and breather work. The water came in the passenger side and flooded the footwell, so it was pretty deep.

pull the fill bungs out and have a look

also park the car and keep an eye around the swivel seals, see if any water drips out there, its easy to fill up in there and stuff the bearings

duh, I never thought of just undoing the filler and looking inside. :oops:

No. Didn't think of that either. Brakes have been a bit crap actually, but I forgot I have drums on the back. It's easy to pop the face off the drums yeah?

Wheels off, drums off and gurney. A wire brush and low pressure hose will do too

If you are going to be doing decent water/mud crossings, its a good idea to let the diffs cool down a bit before, as when they are hot, they are expanded, and going in cold water/mud with a hot diff, it will allow more water/mud ingress, than if they were cold-ish... :D

Where did you get stuck?

If its West Wallsend/Edgy/Killingsworth mud and it's in your diffs, dump it! It's brutal stuff!

I have warn out 2 sets of shoes super quick. Last set really only a day in the sandy crap at Glasshouse. Handbrake went from middle to short to full pull in the one day. Must have been some crap floating in there I reckons.

I also recommend giving the shoes and the drum surfaces a rub over with emery tape. This will help clean off any set in debri and create a nice mating surface.

2 of the 4 vehicles I currently have at my place are Toyo flavoured. It's just a bit of a shit stir really :helloo:
