Hey guys. Not sure if it's been done much but I've had performance cars before this and think a small turbo would do wonders for the 1.3. Has anyone done this or should I be a guinea pig with my 2006? Was thinking something very small that doesn't need an intercooler or put a small one somewhere. Just a thought as i could throw one on for practically nothing.

Do it, I wanna see how it goes. What will you use for ECU upgrade? Injectors and fuel pump?

IMO thinking like this is going to cause you some problems. If you want it to work and be reliable you are going to have to pony up some coin.

I don't know i disagree about needing heaps of coin. I'd run low boost and I'd say these motors would love it they rev so high. The other option is buy a rebuilt mr2 super charger for about 500 and bolt it straight on. I've done them to some other cars and no need for any injectors or ecu and they run only about 3 pounds of boost and dont need an intercooler. Would see an easy 30-40% power increase. Best thing with this setup is id hook it up to a missile switch so you can turn the blower on and off. Not ruining fuel economy. Maybe this would be the go

How will you give it more fuel? 5th Injector? What engine management will you use? Planning on a home made job with some of Jaycar's kit or a full aftermarket ECU? I got quoted $2000 for an ECU all fitted. I thought that was a reasonable price actually. The unit itself is probably up to $1000, then only another $1000 for all that tuning.

Wow!
I'm not going to call you a liar. You may have had some success with this approach on other motors. But I can tell you with quite some certainty, that that approach on a suzuki motor will end in tears, well before you see gains of 30-40%.
I have not had M-series injectors flowed before, but both Baleno/Vit (G16B), and Jimny (G13BB) injectors are at 90% duty cycle running the factory motor. There is no room for forced induction of any kind. I would assume that suzuki has continued this practice for the M-series motors.
Please give it a go though. I'd love to be proven wrong, as this could be a great, true bolt on mod if it works.
Best of luck.

And saying a Toyota blower pumps only 3 psi might not be relevant on a little 1.3L. Chances are it could blow enough to ping it's tits off, at more than double 3psi with a stock pulley, they certainly make enough heat. Now turboing a GTi motor has been done to death with many tuning options available, you may find it cheaper getting a cheap G13B. Either way it won't be done right for peanuts.

The ports on the M18 injectors are larger diameter then the M13 if I remember rightly. Not sure what capacity they run at though. But anyway I believe a common way to overcome is to fit the fifth injector... so I've read anyway. Still looks preety tricky though. Would love to have a play if I my jimny wasn't so new nor was it my daily driver. Same again best of luck.

You must know that turboing the M13 has been done a few times as well, it's just all the kits I've found have been more like 3-4K or more

Thats cheap!
I would assume that installation and tuning would add $1500 to $2500 to that depending on how well the kit is put together.

Yeah, Can't argue with that, I think it was just for the materials when I was looking. Actually it was a supercharger kit.

The general idea of using a factory turbo and manifold from somewhere is a good one though. If someone were to find a kit from a donor car that could be made to fit the M-series engines with minimal mods that would be pretty interesting. I find that sort of stuff fascinating when someone experiments and finds that stock parts from one engine fit another. The successful experiments of others is what made it so easy for me to do my M18 conversion.

A GT17 from a 1.9TD GV would be sweet. Like this one....

The hardware is the cheap bit. GTi's have drop in chips for tuning just about any combo. The ecu and tune will be in the thousands if done right

Ok. so i have been doing some serious research on turbo'ing my 1.6 Vitara.
(not just waffling out my pants like some)
ECU - Adaptronic (1200 including gst) + Fitting (i plan on doing this myself)
Turbo By Itself ( 800 ) For a Reco Mitsubishi TD04
Exhaust Manifold - Flange (50 - TSOR)
Pieces ( about 50)
Turbo Flange To Suit TD04 (20)
Exhaust System - Will make my own Probably cost around 300 (steel + TiG stuff)
Injectors - Luckily we all run top feeds, so im looking at a set out of a late WRX 440CC Low Impedence for around the 200 Dollar Mark.
Tuning - Well thats anyones guess depends where you take it and how far they pull your pants down over it.. the adaptronic is a great ECU so it might just be a pants to knees level.
just with that (and thats really being light on expenditure doing everything myself and mates rates on a few things your still looking at a bill of
2500 + Tuning + the other bits and pieces everybody over looks... it will probably dial in a figure of 3500 for a Well Setup, Reliable Turbo "kit"
Please don't listen to people who waffle on about "30 - 40% Power increase with 3 Pounds of boost" Its a nice load of horse crap, unless your talking about a 300cc Motor... Do Some Serious Research, Price everything up, then look at "Best Bang for your Buck"
What you can and can't do depends on your level of skill and optimism.
if you can make yourself an exhaust system, you've just saved money, if you don't feel confident with wiring ecu's actually go down and speak to people, its amazing how much you can accomplish by doing something...
Happy Building!
and don't forget, If your not sure ASK!
-Rob

You have not mentioned...
Intercooler
Pipework, silicone joiners and clamps,
Water lines, oil lines, sump mods for oil drain
Possible fuel regulator upgrade
Fuel pump upgrade ( lines should be big enough???)
and then there is the well known shortcomings of the G16B internals when paired with forced induction.
At $2500 + tunning, you have still cut it VERY fine.

My mistake, Sorry was at work had to cut the post off early cause my boss walked in...
Yes i also have priced all the things on that list...
So I was looking at running.
Intercooler - 140Bucks (AIR TO AIR) From a dodgy chinaman i know.
Fuel Pump For WRX (same Size and Style as OEM) - $90
Pipework, Silicone Joiners, and Clamps ( About 200 Dollars) Price depends
on Shiny-Ness ( Polished Finished Pipe OR just SS Pipe)
Water Lines, Oil Lines, Sump Mod Won't Be too Bad, have had the pan off A G16B. and will be able to weld a bung And piece of pipe not far from the Pickup. Water Lines Shouldn't be too Bad, was looking at ripping the Welshplug out from below the thermostat and should be able to make a hose fit down into the Steel Piece that joins the 2 Bottom Radiator hoses together.
An Adjustable Fuel Pump Reg Is a must... last thing you want is your motor getting shitty fuel pressure from a 15 year old FPR... I was looking at a malpassi regulator - retail at around 140-160 for their basic adjustable FPR
Fuel Lines Will be big enough for the kind of boost i will be running. looking at running around 8 Pound All day everyday.
I will also be looking at running a Remote Oil Filter Modification. that will be a much lower micron rating than the OEM one's you buy from Repco... last thing you want is a piece of metal or something through the bearings of the turbo...
There really is an almost endless list of research to do before even considering a mod like this, and tackling it yourself...
Not sure what kind of power figure that will give me on 31's Will just have to wait and see... To cope with the new power too I will be looking at upgrading things like Clutches, Axles, CV's, Diff's, Cooling Modifications Larger Rad's, ETC....... the list goes on
But if you are looking at the Cost of a Very VERY basic Setup
Expect to be up for 2500 Plus... ( And thats if you do Most if not all the work ) Bar Tuning...

As I said in the top thread guys just thinking about it. But good discussion as I didn't know much about the Suzuki motors. Thanks for all the good advice, and to the people getting on their high horses saying all the negatives, this is why I have asked the question, to seek advice!

Yes that's correct about the blower. Sorry my mistake it is about 8psi stock not 3. Had a moment there, it's been years since I did that setup on a mates 2.7 hilux. I've got no idea about the setup on the 1.3s. I did it on a 2.7 hilux and we hooked it up via missile switch to turn it on and off. Did nothing with ecu, injectors just added a Walbro fuel pump and a front mount and I can't remember dyno figures but it had about 40% increas and did it all for under 1K. The whole point of doing this was to see if it was achievable for the money and how it ran. Had it running and drivable for 2 years and it never stuffed up. Then got bored and did a 1uzfe Lexus V8 conversion. That was fun!

I think its achievable on the 1.3 also...... at the expense of reliability. The smaller suzuki motors ( with the exception of the G13B GTI) are sort of fragile.
The 3RZ however is a fairly strong motor, so it may have handled the abuse of a slap up charger kit ok.
Just like the 1UZ's are well known for their strength, you can get massive gains from them without cracking the motor open, assuming quality parts, setup and tune are utilized.

(not just waffling out my pants like some) ECU - Adaptronic (1200 including gst) + Fitting (i plan on doing this myself) Turbo By Itself ( 800 ) For a Reco Mitsubishi TD04 Exhaust Manifold - Flange (50 - TSOR) Pieces ( about 50) Turbo Flange To Suit TD04 (20) Exhaust System - Will make my own Probably cost around 300 (steel + TiG stuff) Injectors - Luckily we all run top feeds, so im looking at a set out of a late WRX 440CC Low Impedence for around the 200 Dollar Mark. Tuning - Well thats anyones guess depends where you take it and how far they pull your pants down over it.. the adaptronic is a great ECU so it might just be a pants to knees level. just with that (and thats really being light on expenditure doing everything myself and mates rates on a few things your still looking at a bill of 2500 + Tuning + the other bits and pieces everybody over looks... it will probably dial in a figure of 3500 for a Well Setup, Reliable Turbo "kit" Please don't listen to people who waffle on about "30 - 40% Power increase with 3 Pounds of boost" Its a nice load of horse crap, unless your talking about a 300cc Motor... Do Some Serious Research, Price everything up, then look at "Best Bang for your Buck" What you can and can't do depends on your level of skill and optimism. if you can make yourself an exhaust system, you've just saved money, if you don't feel confident with wiring ecu's actually go down and speak to people, its amazing how much you can accomplish by doing something... Happy Building! and don't forget, If your not sure ASK! Mate no need to get all crazy and say what I am saying is a load of horse crap, I'm not trying to pretend I know lots about Suzuki motors at all, this is why I'm asking the question. No Knickers on, and definitly no knots... Free baller from way back...
Just pointing out the Finer Points of Research is all... And definitly no negatives. just saying that Superchargers probably aren't the way to go.
Its called Constructive Criticism.
