| Post subject: | Gearbox housing leak on lwb vitara |
Gents. I've got a 97 lwb vitara and it's been losing gearbox oil out of a thin hairline fracture in the gearbox housing. Now aside from getting a recon box is their any product i can buy to seal the crack or should i get a welder to it. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Ray |

Drain box and have it welded. This is not the place for the ole Epoxy Knead It. When under there also check all GB mounts are up to scratch. |

When under there also check all GB mounts are up to scratch. If only it were that easy. The most effective approach to welding cast ally ( and ally in general) is to clean the absolute bejesus out of it before welding. Trying to weld up a crack that has gearbox oil in it will be ugly. So the best approach would be to completely strip the box and acid wash the offending casting. |

A) Are you 100% sure it has a crack that's leaking? I'm sure it's possible, but it wouldn't be the first time someone thought a leak that was coming from elsewhere looked like it was coming from a casting mark. B) How did the crack develop?  It's far from common.
C) Vitara manual boxes are cheap and plentiful. I vote to swap the whole box. Welding will be a pain. Steve. |
