I have the standard suzuki roof racks, am i dreaming that i could put a canoe on the roof and still be safe, considering canoe could be say 4 metres long??

Its gonna over hang the front by a mile! I'd be a little worried about the canoe snapping from the flex, esp if you hit a decent bump.

To balance the canoe, it'll overhang the rear by a mile.

Like this

You'd get away with that because of the trailer, but that over hangs too far (well here in Nsw it does, 99% sure an over hang of 60cm from the rear is the most we can have) but that is quite an effort there lol

Exactly. There's no way I'd do that without the trailer. If anyone hit my hand-built Huon Pine canoe, I would cry

btw, it's 5.5m long, so will overhang much more than the OP's 4m canoe.

Here in s.a, its 1m overhang at the rear and must have a flag. Mine was less at the rear because mine was supported forward more off the bullbar. 4.5m canoe

Funny! I saw one just yesterday around warners bay in Newcastle. White Jimny with a canoe on the top. Looked ok to me.

Have the same problem with my Jimny. I'm going to weld a piece of RHS to my bulbar. Then made a t-shape ladder rack style support that slides into the sleeve welded to the bulbar. Drill a whole through both pieces of steel and anchor it in with a bolt and split pin. I will post a photo when this glamour pisses off.

i carry two kayaks on my sierra, one is 4.7m long and the other 4.9m long, in qld rear overhang is 60% of the wheel base starting from the centre of the rear axle, regardless of trailer, and 1.2m forward from the front rack, i think my longer kayak is just a bit outside that, but i don't think i'll ever get hassled
