Post subject:  m15 non vvt conversion

hello, this has probably been covered but ive got a 1.3 non vvt jimny and ive been trying to search on here about the converting it to 1.5 non vvt. but i havnt found anything that says the standard 1.3 ecu will run it safely. just 'that it works'....
ive also tried googling wether the m15 does come in non vvt but havnt found anything helpful at alll..
can anyone please tell me if the non vvt 1.5 is a straight swap running on all the 1.3 electrics and ecu, also what they come in?

sorry if im bringing up an old topic...

thanks..

ummm I know that steak_knife told me that m15a vvt conversion on my 1.3vvt would be all sweet to run the standard computer :D:D

of course u just need to swap everything from your 1.3 to the 1.5 so you can plug the harness straight back in :D

We have a 2006 vvt jimny

- Just wanted to see what year model motors im looking for and what there out of. has to be newer than your car, so 07.

- Exactly what I need to swap over onto the new block.
Lot's: sump & pickup, intake & exhaust manifold's,eng mount's, flywheel & clutch, rocker cover & dipstick, bracket's for a/c & alt, water outlet's.
That all form the top of my head

- Does the engine harness simply plug straight in to mine.
will cause your useing all your stuff

- And will it bolt up to the gearbox all good? will be mabye looking in the future at swapping out to the mkII gear box for better ratios. also our box is getting a bit stiff. Bolt straight up

- No ecu tuning will be neccesary?? or would it be worth it?
No, the 1.3 ecu will run a 1.5, but 1.8 is to far...

someone did this...
and did a great write up
let me find it

nup sorry... cant find it.

now that i think about it it might of been a 1.8

also the throttle body, injectors, fuel rail? all the ancillaries bolt straight up?
the jimny is a breath of fresh air compared to the shit i work on everyday lol
so pretty much straight forward?

I believe the M15 in the early holden cruse was non vvt

so ive done a little bit more digging and found the early new shape swifts have a non vvt 1.5, should be easy to come by :D

starting the scout tomorrow ;)

Smiffkid runs a non-vvt m15a in his jimny :) goes like shit on a stick :P i would say even better than a m18a vvt ;)

Yes, the first of the new body swift's, you can get 1.6 out of a Liana to... :helloo:

Which would be the better motor to drop into a Jimny?? the 1.5 or the 1.6?? I daresay the Liana motor would probably be cheaper to source..

I did the write up on the 1.3VVt - 1.8VVt Conversion.
Black Jimny Trekker M18 powered
That should set you right as to the mechanicals required to do the conversion.

I thought all the second gen swifts were all VVT M15's, I don't believe that some were non-vvt but maybe I'm wrong. Have a look at the holden Cruze, I think they might have been non-vvt M15 engine, and as said the Liana 1.6 is non vvt. Incidentally the ECU on the Liana 1.6 is VERY similar to the Jimny non VVT ECU. Compare Jimny Manual 9950181A00-01E section 6E10 to 6E-13 with Liana Manual 99500-54G00-01E section 6E1-9 to 6E1-11. You'd have to swap a few pins around, but not many compared to what has to be done for many of the other conversions around.

Or just use the M13 ECU, I've not had any issues to speak of yet running the M18VVT on an M13VVT ecu, it even managed to pass emmisions testing to Euro 3 level.

The Original Jimny engine is a Short stroke, so it loves to rev, develops torque at a higher engine speed.

The Liana 1.6 is a long stroke so you'll develope torque at lower engine speeds.

The M15 and M18 engines are both Square so balance between torque and revs, so I'd favour the M16 over the M15, but not if i could get a nice low mileage M15. I think just get the best deal and bang it in. It's easy as far as engine conversions go anyway.

All the best with it.

Regarding the VVT's only...

-No, doesn't have to be newer engine then your car, just needs to conform to the same ADR's particularly emmisions. You have a 2006 jimny so your's is Euro 3 emmisions. ADR79/01.

- Good list you got most of it add to the list pulleys and i think you got it all. It's easier to just list what you do need from the donor engine. You do need only the injectors, engine block (excluding sump and oil pick up), The Head (excluding rocker cover)

- Agreed wiring harness will plug in

- Agreed Gearbox will bolt up perfectly. Have to use Jimny Flywheel. Jimny clutch is also good for the job, in fact it's the same size as a lIana 1.6 and only a bit smaller then a Liana 1.8 clutch.

- 1.8 is not too far for the 1.3 ECU to handle. will run a bit lean on full load, with occasional drop off into open loop on long full load hills (so will run rich for these usually short amounts of time), will run ever so slightly rich when cruising, but not enough to even affect fuel economy. Also needs at least 1800rpm when pulling away from stand still or will bog a little although my driving style was always to launch at around 1800 or more rpm so this glitch never affects me anyway. My M18 returns 10.6l to 100km on freeway.

I haven't got that much more power then a well sorted 1.3, but the driving exceeds the mere performance figures. In 3rd and 4th gear especially it goes a LOT harder then the 1.3 engine so I suspect torque is up quite a lot.

I didn't know there was a NON-VVTI M15a Available???

I Put a M16a (out of a pre 2004 liana) NON-VVTI in my 2001 Jimny and it is a great swap. Drives so much better, with less gear changes required. The M13 ECU will run it and there is no underdash wiring required.

I Used the M16a Injectors, M13 Throttle body, M13 Fuel rail and just swapped all the stuff across to make the M16 a Nrth Sth Engine.

The best bit is i picked up the engine for $600 (under 50k on it) with a broken front plate (from the accident) and just swapped the one of my M13a straight over.

Nice. I paid $700 for my M18, I think it's a 2005, so yeah, plenty of cheap ones out there.

sorry to dig this up, but what would happen if you were to fit a vvti motor to a non vvti jimny?
Could you not just run no vvti or run it so its always on the aggressive setting, mount it with a switch so when you are rock crawling put it on the low rpm setting?

I have set this up on an sr20det before just wondering what triggers the vvti in a 1.5/1.6/1.8a vvti

as I dont want to put a grubby old motor in my car, and there are SOOOOOO many cheap 1.5 vvti motors out there.

id say just revs, which is easy done. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a vvti swift and I shall tell you!

but is it a simple case of swapping ecus on the stock non vvti loom and bobs your uncle or is there a handful of wires that need to be connected or what,
everyone is so "ITS BEEN DONE THERE ARE THREADS WHY ARE YOU ASKING" about this but clearly there are many holes in the information that people seem to so casually skip over. Its obvious that you can go vvti to vvti swap just by changing some hoses and injectors and sump etc, but that makes up like 60% of potential jimny conversions. The motor options for a non vvti jimny are all ratty and gross, I dont want a 235 thou k liana motor in my jimny.

So about 30 hours later, she's all done.
It was pretty straight forward really, with only a few little snags along the way.

My advice to anyone going to attempt the conversion would be get a half cut. The motor was pretty much plug and play but just be wary that powersteer and a.c. hoses are ever so slightly different. The a.c. bracket/tensioner is also different depending on whether the car has p/steer or not.

The m13 gearbox also sits about 25mm further back than the g13 auto and as such the holes for the mount don't line up, but it's nothing a quick re-drill won't fix.

The holes in the tunnels for the shifters differ as well, with the manual shifter needing a much bigger hole to fit through and the threaded holes for the boots are also differently spaced.

Chop out the footrest or you'll clip it with the side of your foot. (The pedal box physically fits with it in there, though).

The cluster is plug and play, the engine mounts are the same, just drop the steering to pull the pedal box there's no need to disconnect it and appart from that it's probably one of the easiest motor swaps I've come across in ten years in the trade. Very straight forward. Bring on Fraser Island.

It has been done.... Might be best to pm KayDay and have a chat to him about it.

Sounds like you'll need engine gearbox and loom + ac hoses etc :)

surely you would use the originial aircon bracket and compressor and hoses on the new block?

All good, do any of you guys know where I can find an m18a wiring diagram, or 16a or 15a as long as its vvti, also if you have the same spec motor with non vvti so I can compare and see what specifically needs to done, ill do a write up on how to do the swap if I get the info.

Dont even bother thinking about M16 vvt, thats Swift Sport and is all canbus and fly by wire and stuff.

I think you'll need to get up close to both engines, nobody is even going to know if the manifolds interchange let alone is sensors will swap or plug in.

I think the best option would be Liana M18 and wire the Liana ECU in.
