ok, so my car will idle like crap (nearly die) but when lights, aircon vent fan, stereo any of those things are turned on, the auto choke comes on and revs the car up.

If i adjust the idle screw to make the car idle at 800 when everything is off and then i turn the lights or something on, it will rev up to 2k - 2.5k revving up then down then up then down between 2 and 2.5.

I found this on another thread which sounds like my problem but it doesnt mention anything to do with the electrics.

I had this problem not long ago, tried swapping leads 2 and 3 as well as smothering the carby with a rag.

*******"Thanks to one of the mechanics at work who used to have a few zooks I found out my auto choke was stuck on and was flooding the carb which is why it would die at idle (coming up to traffic lights). So he used a cable tie to stop the choke coming on at all. Just need to let it idle in the mornings for 5 mins before driving."*****

I assume that something is crossed over between all the lights etc and the auto choke.

fuel economy is terrible! in line with the choke issue i guess.

That is simlpy a switch activated idle up. This is to account for added load on your alternator. Yours works, good stuff. Remember this switch it activated by both the headlights and fan. Now to adjust it.

Heres what you do...

Warm the car up and let it idle.

Adjust idle via the long silver phillips head screw at passenger rear side to 800-900 RPM.

Now, turn the headlights on. Go to the front of the carb and you will see a brass coloured vacuum pot with a linkage running to the throtle shaft. On the linkage is a screw. You need to slowly back this screw out until you idle is back between 800-1000 RPM.

Turn the lights off and turn off car. Go crack a cold one and be happy that you didn't take it to a mechanic and spend more $$$.

IMO if it's a carby problem, an auto sparky won't be the one with the skills to fix it. Try & find a carby specialist in your area.

If the above method doesnt work then I will take it to a carby specialist or just find a kids plastic honk horn and sellotape it to the top of the engine.

Same difference ?

are these the scews you were talking about ?

the first two pics are the screw at the back, (flat head) and the last one is at the front of the carb.

Thats the ones you want. Is this a Mikuni carb or Aisin? What year is your car?

If you get someone to turn the lights on while you look at the front linkage on the carb you will see where it activates.

Yes it seems your idle screw is a flat head.

there is nothing going on at the front of the carb when the lights are turned on, it must be something activating at the back.

Cant stop that pulsing revving by adjusting either of the screws :(

It's an AISAN.

could this possibly be something in the wiring or do you think it will be meachincal ?

That diaphragm on the left in the 3rd pic should activate when there is load on the engine IE lights heater fan ect, make sure thats working.

If not pull the air line off and suck it and see if that moves it.
If it doesn't the diaphragm most likely has a whole in it, if it does it's the solenoid in the very left corner of the pic that may be the problem.

Sorry for the late BUMP, but for search preference,

The screw on the bottom of the throttle cable linkage is the Cold idle-Choke idle speed.
