Post subject:  Jap import Supercharger on a 1.3 - who's done it?

Hey Guys,

Im not new to modifying turbo cars from rice burners to diesel 4wds.
Problem i have is i love my zook more fun than my modded d40 but i just need a little more power to make it comfortable in traffic and on the hwy for long drives. My Jimny is an auto which i now happen to really like, as an example the road up to the glasshouse look out i am flat to the floor and cant go much fast than 40kays lol

After condisdering other alternatives im going to see if i can supercharge the little 1.3 for a little extra power. I need to keep it relatively low cost, simple, low boost so i can try and get away with stock efi ecu and injectors.

There are a couple of supercharger options from jap import wreckers from the 4agze to the amr500 and even smaller.

Making the supercharger mount and intake piping are pretty straight forward but i need some advice on how to connect the pulley up.
I guess i will need to research some pulley ratios and maths etc.

Are there any auszookers out there who have done this or have some thoughts on it? Cheers

There's a supercharger kit available, YouTube m13a supercharger :)

Waaaaay cool but it's about $8000

Thanks Jimny_Timmy, Ive seen off the shelf kits but yes way over my price.
The route im going down the actual charger will cost around $300-$500.
Add a Transmition cooler as a precaution.
Fabing the mount and the pulley drive and ration is going to be the hard bit for me with little experience.

Im not looking for wheel spinning performance just need to at least be as quick as a 1.5l hyundai getz, that would be real nice :)

Might be easier to put an m15a or m18a in... Not sure in the specs but prob about the same power, still prob be over a thousand though lol

I'd love to see a supercharger done though :)

I like the bigger engine idea but i cant see that happening for less than 3k?

What year model?

Are you able to do the work $1kish or do you have to get someone to do it?$$$

for any jim, g13bb or m13a, i would just change the block, and keep the rest of your original parts on it.

BlueSuzy i think i have the M13A will doulbe check, its a 2003 model and that year was a change over year in specs.

I must find out more about changing over the block, are you talking about puting a b16b or baleno block mating up to the m13a topend?

With the supercharger route i can get the mounts fabed up for next to nothing, (cost of steel and some Beer) The pulley fittings and possible modifications are a unknown at this stage.

Cheers

I can't see the auto lasting too long. They aren't known for their strength, and they are dear as poison to replace.

look up SD Performance. they do bolt on Supercharger kits for m13a jimny's for around $4000 everything you need, running low boost 6psi I think. Uses a rotrex supercharger "centrifugal type"

na, If you had a pre 00 G13bb, you would go same series engine. G16b

You have a m13a, not sure if vvt, but using another 'm' block, 1.5,1.6,1.8, more power is to be had. Id do it for a manual though...

You can barely buy a rotrex for that price, it must be a damn suspect kit.

I got a price from SD, $2900 then another $400 for injectors and andother grand for a ecu, for that money if do a engine swap.

I hear the stuff about autos failing, they are rare as and havent founs some one who broke one yet, wonder if i can beef it up or make help protect it a bit. I assume they are constered 'weak' and its not a problem of auto trans oil getting too hot and not lubricating any more?

Cheers

Gwagonsteve has seen a few go pop inthe VIC 4wd club I believe. I've not had first hand experience with them, but I have spoken to auto tranny builders about toughening them up a little, but there is little to no industry knowledge about them. Kind of disappointing really.

I doubt that its a fluid temp issue leading to failure though. All the damage I have heard of was caused by large tyres and lack of gearing ( read: load)

Surely forced induction will create similar loads :?

Actually I haven't. gregc's car is Jimny auto and it's been flawless, but it does have a gauge and a big cooler. I don't think it's seen over 105C on the gauge.

There may be high km Jimny's that are killing autos - I don't know. I do know they are hard to find.

I do also know there is no aftermarket support for the auto, Its torque ceiling is about 110Nm, and it was primarily designed for the 660cc Jimny.

At some stage Greg might look to run a G16 in front of his Jimny auto to get some more punch on big hills. It will be interesting to see if that kills it.

The hassle is that if you kill a Jimny auto, it's a pretty big job to swap in an AW-4.

If it was primarily a car you could look at a trimatic, but the road gearing is a hassle.

Steve.

Interesting, off topic a bit and on to the auto issue. If i rear gear id get a little more driveability and will that help lessen to froces on the auto? What is considered big wheels? In running 215/75/15. Cheers

I don't imagine gearing would help, as the output at the crank is the first thing the auto sees. Assuming a mild supercharger setup would add atleast 25% torque to the factory issued 110Nm, I think its safe to say that you would be well past the design limits of the jimny autoif what Gwagen says, is true.

And no, your tyre size would add very little load over the OEM size, so don't worry about that.

Did you ever end up doing the super charger?

I am very interested in doing the AMR500 super charger for daily driving.

Just small boost, something that will work with stock ecu etc?
