My jimny 06 vvt auto has just started making a whining noise, this noise seems to match the gear changes. It makes it only when the car is cold.
I have checked the fluids in both the gearbox and tranfer box, The trans was flushed and had a new filter about 20tho k ago. the car has done about 137000.
Any ideas as to common faults. Thanks

Yeah i do, its a jimny bits one and ive had it on for about 4 months and noise just started. Im hoping its not a bearing in the box, is there an easy way to see if its one of the drive shaft unis

Bolts on transfer guard? Even half turn might cause vibrations.

The Whine has stopped! So has my jimny though, I lost all drive forward and reverse the other day, Saw lots of smoke ( Trans fluid leaking onto exhaust). Car is now in parts w the gearbox at an auto trans specialist. This shouldn happen to a dec 06 built Jimny w 137000k on the clock and the box has been serviced! Not happy. Looks like it will be an expensive fix. Anyone got any ideas as to sourcing a 2nd hand box or a different type to stick in there.

I'm interested to find out what the outcome of this will be. Ive got an 07 Auto that has just started to whine when cold. It only started after a day at the beach in low range, so I'm thinking it might be the transfer for me, but keen to know what you eventually have fixed. Regardless, I hope its not too expensive for you

So the whine was a bearing, it then seized and sent spread itself throughout the box and ended up snapping a shaft and gears, end result wad cheaper to buy 2nd hand box at 2.5 grand than to repair. So sandez I'd get yours checked before it grenades

My auto has had a whine the last 10thousand kays. I think it only has the slight whine at idle tho and its definfently auto trans as it makes didnferent noise as i go from park to drive etc. I will check again properly on my symptoms.
Ben did yours whine while driving?

It started off whining when cold, then after about a week it whined all the time, this lasted about 5 days then shit itself.
