Post subject:  Ebay Vitara Snorkel

Hi all,

I am trying to find a snorkel for my 92 Vit G16A but can only find them for the G16B on ebay. I don't want to pay $400 hence ebay :)

Also there is 2 options... fibreglass of a LLDPE. I would prefer the LLDPE as it will flex a bit and not crack as readily, but has anyone got any links/experience on where I can find one to suit my car? Or is there no difference between the G16A and G16B snorkels?

Cheers!
Pete

I recently got a fiberglass ebay snorkel. quality was decent, template was a bit off and no flexy hose or hose clamps to connect to the airbox but i expected all that. i would buy one again. All 1.6 snorkels are the same AFAIK

I bought a 16B one from them a while back and fitted it over Christmas. The only issue I had was with the bracket on the pillar – after I had drilled all the main holes in the quarter panel I bolted the bracket to the snorkel, dummy fitted it and then marked where to drill the hole in the pillar. The actual angle of the bracket (90 degrees) didn’t seem quite right, but I hoped that when I pulled everything together with bolts the snorkel would flex enough for everything to work. Turns out one (of the 3) bolt hols line up well, I reamed an second hole and didn’t worry about the third. Maybe I frucked up, first time and all. I would definitely buy one of these again, the template was spot on but is a bit scary hacking into your panel because you can’t tell if it will fit until you drill the holes. It also took me a fair bit of googling to try and work out what a silicon free sealant is (think it may only be an EFI issue, something about the oxygen sensor) but ran with Sikaflex, hope this is right.

Sikaflex is great stuff... I never use silicone where I can use Sikaflex instead, ie. on everything that doesn't need to be clear...

Stay away from clear 'sealents' or 'paintable silicones', these have poor durability.

You only need nesting ones that say odorless as its he chemical smell that does the Efi

Poita, I flicked the guys at direct4x4 a msg asking if the G16B snorkel will fit a G16A, seems like its only the length of the of air intake hose that will be a bit short (by 40mm). Easy fix. Looks like a pretty good buy, cheers for the link ;)

These are the guys i bought mine off their about $20 cheaper if you can wait a bit longer it's the LLDPE type same as direct 4x4 i think. I've had mine on for over a year without any problems not much can go wrong with them, no fading or cracking.

I have a fibreglass snorkel & I'm paranoid about cracking it, not so much from roll overs as it would be the least of my worries... but snagging it on a branch or hitting it on a dirt bank would pretty much destroy it.

i'd go poly if i was to do it again.

Yeah mine didn't come with instructions, but it's not too hard.
line up the template the little rectangle hole with your blinker.
Tape it on, mark your holes then measure the diameter (closer to box part of the snorkel because the tube tapers) of the snorkel that goes through the fender.
Remove template, with the measurement use a compass to make a circle for the big hole, cut and drill your holes.
temporarily fit snorkel with upper bracket on mark where it has to sit on the a pillar.
Remove snorkel and upper bracket line upper bracket with marks mark the holes and drill and rivet bracket on with non corrosive sealant on rivets.
Fit snorkel and use non corrosive sealant on all joints.
Well that's the way i did it.

Always remember measure twice cut once.

Ok, so coming back to this again... Mandy is going away for 5 days so I thought it would be a great chance to get something done on the Vit!

Jumped on ebay but can't find any G16A snorkels anywhere. Only G16B. What would be the difference?

Also, the pipe that goes through the fender is an odd water drop shape on most I have seen, how did everyone attach their after market (ie stainless or aluminium) piping to it? Flecible silicone joiners? If so, what diameter silicone pipe is needed?

Cheers,
Pete

Just a bump on this one :)

Anyone know what the difference (if any) is between the G16A and G16 snorkels? There is no G16A ones on ebay that I can find but heaps of G16B, and I'm not paying $400-$500 for a genuine Safari one!

Post subject:  Re: Snorkel for G16A Vitara... ebay?

Just ordered one of the G16B ones from direct4x4. He assures me the only difference is the pipe in the engine bay is 50mm shorter on the G16B. I don't know what that means I will have to do, but will find out when it arrives! Will update this for anyone else facing the same problem.

Snorkel arrived today! Looks good and feels very solid. Hopefully fit it on the weekend if I get a chance.
What type of Sikaflex do you guys recommend? I found there are a few types (numbers).

Ok I slept in this morning but up and keen to give the snorkel a go.

BUT I was thinking about it while getting together a Bunnings list of stuff needed and I am stuck already.

Because the G16B snorkel pipe that goes into the engine is about 40mm to short, I need a rubber joiner/extender. But the snorkel pipe is that stupid tear drop shape. Do I need to find a rubber pipe that shape and if so where would I get one? OR I can get some round rubber and just slide it up the pipe a bit more as it looses the tear drop shape a bit further up. The pipe is aa smidge over 70mm I think.

Just trying to think of everything I will need before I start pulling it all apart!

I assume I will need some pipe and joiners to go all the way to the airbox but can sort that out when the time comes.

Post subject:  Re: Snorkel for G16A Vitara... ebay?

Ok nearly finished but not real happy with the fit of it.

If I secure it first by the A pillar this is what its like:

I Don't like how that the bracket is pulling out from the pillar from that...
Image

Rear of snorkel nice and snug:
Image

Front is miles off:
Image

If I do the base up first then it fits the body lines really well but there is no way in hell these 3 holes will line up:
Image

So I an going to get a dremel and elongate those 3 holes and hopefully that will be ok. But gee I was in a foul mood by this stage!

When I fitted my snorkel it didn't line up perfect either. Plus instead of drilling in the A-pillar I used marine grade Sikaflex as the snorkel was not snug against the pillar. I figured since they use Sika to glue body panels on and boats together then a snorkel should be a piece of piss. 5 yrs on and it's still holding with no sign of letting go.

I also put a generous bead of Sika around the hose joins.

So how far does the snorkel fit off the pillar with the bolt holes filed out? Would u b able to flex it to fit that bracket without filing? I'm sure u probably tried that :) just thought I'd ask anyways

Snorkel doesn't flex, I tried! It's quite thick and solid.
