Hi Guys,

I want to hear from those who have sold modified 4wds before.
With the QLD limitations on wheel size just about all of us with upsized tyres are in breach.
How does one get a safety cert as a requirement for private sale?

I am selling my jimny currently and i think this will be a problem with 215/75/15?

Reason i pick wheel size out of all the usual mods is because its the most obvious and easily picked by road worthy guys.

I coudl alwasy sell it de-registered but that would also lessen the chances of selling it.

for a jimny I think those tyres are the biggest that you can fit legally, so you'll be fine

my sierra got a roadworthy with 31's he said just as long as they dont stick out its all good

215's don't look big at all on a Jimny. You should be fine.

I will give it a try but i think QLD law is 15mm over size is all thats permited.
I know some roadworthy guys over look certain things and some miss other points.
Any one able to PM me the number of some on in Brisbane?

One more question, if it fails youget 14 days to rectify, if i dont rectify in 14 days is there any bad outcome or i just loose the money i paid for the roady?

I think the unfinished roadworthys, ones that don't get completed in the audit period get sent to the "Transport Department Gistarpo". Then they check it of against other inspection stations. Can't you borrow some stock wheels?

I've left one for about 3 months and got one elsewhere due to being pulled up on dodgy stuff like rust on windscreen wiper arm and washer jets being not 'aimed' properly! I think you just lose your second 'free' inspection, but I could be wrong - just didn't have any problem.

mine got roadworthied with 235/75/15's snapped engine mount, hole in dampiner, hole in floor, siezed brake Im sure you'll be fine most go with the old as long as it dosent poke out the sides

For NSW VSI 09 covers the max wheel size you can fit to a vehicle and the changes in offset that are allowed. 215/75/R15 are within those limits generally, although some really agressive Muddies might exceed it by a couple of mm when brand new.

Then refer to VSI 06 and wheels are included as a 'self-certifiable mod' amongst over minor mods such as suspension enhancements for example. So you in effect certify yourself that your 215/75/R15 conform to VSI 09. If you go any bigger, 235's for example you can't self certify and legally an engineer should certify the mods and it will be registered as a modified vehicle with the RTA.

I have noted that since the engineering process in NSW got shaken up, VSI 06 has been withdrawn from the new RTA website. So it seems that they really don't want anyone to do 'self-certification' anymore perhaps.

I had my vehicel engineered recently and the engineer covered all the mods, even those that VSI 06 used to say we could certify ourselves.

I think a reason for this could be, lets say you add 215/75/R15, you have 'self-certified' them to conform with VSI 06, but you don't tell your insurance company. Are you insured or not? Is the vehcile classified as modified or not? I would think you are insured, but you have left a gray area for an insurance company to leverage you out of the money they owe you.

Basically what I'm saying is if you have a mild lift and mild tyres like 215's you are probably ok, you can print a copy of VSI 06 and 09 and put them in your glove box for keeps sake - what you tell your insurance, modified or non-modified i have no idea. But if you go any larger you really need to get the vehicle engineered strictly speaking and also insure it as such - a modified vehicle

Thats the NSW way, sorry it might not give an answer for the QLD way.

You can do some mods yourself, without Engineer certifying them.
Tyres are covered in pages 16 -18.

You cannot exceed the maximum diameter of the original largest factory fit tyre by more then 15mm. But you can go 1.5x wider then the original on a jimny so long as it doesn't scrub anything. So you can go wide and fat but not much bigger I think.

Are 215's more then 15mm in diameter over the stock tyres?

Yep!

Dude just take your vehicle in. 90% chance they will not worry about it at all. Just make sure your vehicle is clean and presentable and tires don't hang out all over the place. I had no issues what so ever when I got my sierra roady on 30's. Then again I guess they were too interested at looking at the immaculate state of the vehicle .

If all fails im sure someone on here has stock treads that you could borrow.
