Hi, I was wondering what the best way to go with removing the strip of plastic below the door which is concealing bulk rust. And how to put one of those flash checker plates there instead, and also where to get one

The plastic stuff will just pull off. The the steel ribs underneath are spot welded on. Get a grinder with a flap disc and grind out these spots until the rib falls off ( you be able to feel and see the spot welds if it is clean) Dont take too much off the welds or you will have a hole in your sill. But dont take off too little and try and pull them off or else you will pull the weld out of you sill and again have a hole. After theyre off use your flapdisk to clean up what rust is there and then paint it As for the checkerplates either pop rivet them on or sikaflex or a bit of both. Hope this helps |

Get the checkerplate at a steel place youll just have to look around. A flap disk is a disk that goes on a grinder preferably a smaller 4inch grinder it is covered in heaps of small peices of sandpaper so it cuts out a fair bit but also leaves a very smooth surface unlike a grinding disk |

checker plate is ok I suppose .there are plenty of alternatives that are pretty cheap.and look a bit better I think..I just bolted some heavy angle iron to the chassis rail then grabbed a strip of truck wheel bumpstop I found at work, you know the stuff they bolt to the ground, split it down the middle cut it to length with a 45 degree cut so it fits snug on the flare.. and bolted it to the angle iron, then sikaflexed it to the sill,just below the door..I can jump and down on it ,,takes a pounding and doesnt dent up..and no water catcher ,Ive always thought its better to use the junk you have lying around clean it up and resuse it..but Im cheap.. |

Checkerplate is stupid. It's designed for your FEET to have traction on. It's correct name is "tread plate" I don't want my sills to have traction on the ground. Tyres are for traction, I want my sills/corners to slide off of obstacles. Use flat sheet so you slide on it rather than get caught up. I have absolutely no idea where the idea of using tread plate for sills/corners etc came from. I think it's a US trend that's died out there (thankfully) but persists here. It makes less than no sense and makes a car look like a badly constructed high school project IMHO. Steve. |

Shit is my zuk that bad? yep  I think that in a lot of instances where a panel is prone to lots of impacts it works well to hide dents. I used it on the front panel of my camper for this reason. Also handy if my trailer ever winds up sitting on its tail and I happen to need to walk across the front
