Post subject:  Front Diff leaking out onto wheels

Hey lads,

After giving my Sierra W/T a bit of a workout on the weekend, I've noticed a significant amount of diff oil leaking out onto my front right tyre. I haven't had time to look at it properly yet, but it's getting in and around the disk brake as well.

I'm going to tackle the job on Saturday, but I just thought if I can find out what part is likely busted, I can get in and fix the whole thing on the weekend, rather than discovering the problem and then having to wait till the replacement part arrives to fix it.

It's definitely diff oil, not brake fluid. I'm guessing it's a dead seal or bearing or something?

Cheers once again guys. :)

mines been leaking for nearly 2 months now... getting it sorted on friday cos i reckon the front diff must be almost empty by now. Mine's leaking bad enough that after sitting for just 2hrs its left a puddle of diff oil about 90mm diameter!

this is what you need to fix it too: http://www.suzistore.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=1183&bc=no

Thanks lads.

Damn Alien, do you reckon you need to replace all the bearings and backup plates as well? Surely you can just get away with replacing the seal?

no point doing half a job... lol

sometimes the axle bearings are shot, which is what puts pressure on the seal in the first place.

Yeah, I tend to agree.
If it's anything like replacing the rear wheel bearings, you won't really want to be having to go back in again later if the bearing ruins another seal.
Advice heeded. Hopefully suzi sport sell that kit and I won't have to wait a week for suzistore to deliver.

FYI - Bit cheaper -> http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Swivel-Overh ... 145wt_1146

Or with replacement wheel bearings - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Swivel-Wheel ... 988wt_1169

Jack the car up at the front. Put on stands. If nothing moves clonks wobbles forcing the wheel by pushing and pulling the top and bottom of wheel, Everything is fine, Just do the axle seal.

Ive been on a trip, Flexed up, all my diff oil poured out one side. Drove the rest of the Lowrange only 4wd trip. Changed it when i got home.

Try Pine Rivers Bearings at Brendale, Past the 4by Wreckers in the Shops were Future Auto is. Got all my seals and bearings from them.
Front wheel bearings are expensive so if there good I'd leave them be.
