Post subject:  Vitara Diff noises

Hey everyone
My 1994 Vitara SWB is making noises coming from the rear Differential Mostly when im turning the sound is like a "Clunk" and it happens alot
I do have a Calmini 3" suspetion lift on the car and it dose have 32" tyres. Everyone tells me not to worry about it but i really want to know what it is
Ive looked at my drive shaft and its NOT loose and ive checked all my rear Bushings in my rear suspention The only thing i can think of is the Biff Bearings are worn out.
Can someone tell me how hard is it to change rear diff bearings or if you know what the problem is PLEASE help me out this sound is driving me crazzy!
Thanks
Luka

have you checked the Heim joint for play? (rear upper suspension link on the diff end)

if it is the wheelbearings, have a look at this link for a DIY guide on how to replace them http://www.acksfaq.com/rear_axle_bearin ... cement.htm

X2 for checking the heim joint. They wear quite quickly. and would cause the noise you are complaining of. It will be quite hard to check with the car sitting on its wheels though.

Oh, some years ago we had a car in the club with a calmini kit and the owner complained of the same thing, and was convinced it was the heim.

Turns out it was a front strut that had failed. It can be surprisingly difficult to pinpoint where a noise is coming from.

Worn diff bearings will not cause a "clunk" unless there is also a terrible whine coming from the diff at speed. They don't fail silently.

Are you running the driveshaft spacer included in the calmini kit? It is possible the slip yoke is overextended, I reckon this could cause a clunk.

Just some other ideas if the heim joint checks out OK.

Before I got my new exhaust fitted, the driveshaft spacer would hit the exhaust on articulation.

This made a fair banging sound, not like the usual exhaust rattle I would have expected.

sweet, the calmini heim joint isn't the best quality IMO, mine snapped after 70,000kms

I used a Trail Gear Heim Joint to replace it.

The calmini kit uses a 3/4" - 16 Right Hand thread rod end
