I won't to know what is the best model of vitara to buy

Ok I'm purposely going to hijack this. Thinking of getting a Vitara as a daily. I don't want something as slow as a Sierra, I don't plan to take it extreme fourbying but I do plan to take it camping and some beach with probably the missus at the wheel with the bub while I drive the Sierra. We both prefer manuals but I'm not apposed to an auto but if economy is affected then no. It will get a small iron man lift and some all terrains in the next size up from factory at the most. I don't mind if LWB or SWB but economy and price are a factor. Don't know a thing about carby's and would like to keep it that way. Budget will be hopefully under 7 grand.

Suggestions?

The original poster should take note of the replies I get.

I have a 40mm lift and 225/75 16's on my SV. Its fine. The bigger tyres have knocked the acceleration around a little, but nothing like what they would do to a 1.6 vitara.

I still want 5.12 for it, but I may very well sell the car before that happens......ie, I can live with it as is.

Are you going to comp it, use it for touring, or just use it to take the kids to school? If you took a little more time thinking about your question before posting, you may actually get the answer you are looking for.

SV420 (J20a 2.0l 4Cyl) SWB or SV620 (H20a 2.0l V6) LWB (Widetrack Vitara's) add in a set of 5.12:1's from a 1.6 & you're onto a winning combo.

I'd prefer not to worry about gearing changes, I have the Sierra for crawling. Will the gearing really need doing on nearly factory sized tyres? Also are things like cv's etc affected greatly by a small 50mm maximum. Lift?

gearing wont be needed for standard size tyres and cv's will be fine with a 50mm lift the front alloy center will propably break first anyway but not a problem for light 4wdriving

225/75/16 are quitelivable with the 2l thats for sure any bigger and you would want 5.12's with 245/75/16 my car usto before transfer case swap drive basically like it did with standard tyres in terms of acceleration and stuff problem with the sv620 is all the power is up around 3 grand and higher

Yeah I'm more leaning toward the 2.0L 4cyl for cheaper rego too. This thing is replacing my 530hp V8 commodore though so I don't want another big tyred slug like the Sierra is on 34's.

I found running 30's was just bearable & swapping to 31's really knocked it around & is when I did the ratio change. Heaps of Vitara's are running around on the 235/75r15 combo & they seem to perform alright on the open road & off road.

The original poster should take note of the replies I get. I'd recomend a 5door V6 GV for what you have described. The missus will enjoy driving it as they are not as farm like as the earlier Vitara's. you can get them for around the $6K mark if your paitent. Allow about $1000 for 40mm lift and a set of 225/75R16 muds and you will have a nice comfy 4wd. You don't need to re gear them with the 225's but they are much nicer to drive if you do.

Ive had 235/75 on mine for 120000km, might knock a bit off it but its still ok

It will dull the performance slightly, but a vitara is no rocket ship to start with, so you'll be able to live with it. A 235/75/15 is approx 28.5" tall. The 225/75/16 that I run are about 29.5", so they knock a little more wind from the sails.

Why do you think I'm so keen for more powah? 31s are really too much for the poor little 1.6 - I'm living with it but it takes a pretty major adjustment in attitude and patience! From what I've heard from others 235s are OK ungeared.
