as the tittle says i am having trouble starting my sj80 after doing the 1.6 conversion from my vitara was hoping one of the zookie guru's might be able to please help tried to upload a video but having trouble so will try and explain best what is happening it has started a couple times then died, now im getting power to everything, and gone through the usual with plugs and leads and so forth but when i try and kick it over, it wants to go but just wont get there and i need to pump the pedal. its almost like it is starving for fuel but checked and thats not the issue so the question is if anyone has had or knows the problem is it possible that my comp could be sending a fault or could it be something even more simple any help would be awesome and i will keep trying to upload the video |

nah took it to a place in tuggers paid for the tow truck twice and 300 bucks got told thay started it was just the starter motor, i then replaced it and found out the timing was way out and they diddn't bother to check which i asked for so i got ripped so worked out a few probs myself and am hoping this is the last one in gordon by the way |

I would Check for an air leak between AFM and the T/B. I had a similar problem and it ended up being a split in the air pipe on that bend just after the AFM. If all good go back to basics...check fuel and spark. Good Luck |

Which fuel pump are you running? Check to see if the injectors are actually spraying a mist while it is running, or turning over. |

take the dizzy adjusting bolt out and rotate it a bit one way and see if that helps if not go the other way. mine was a tooth out and had similar issues unit corrected. |

tried rotating the dizzy when i did the plugs didn't help unfortunatly as far as i can tell the timing is alright took the cover off and had a look after i got it back from the auto elecs on the same note when checking the timing belt to make sure it hadn't slipped any teeth as the donor car had been in an accident, i used the single line that looked like an I as my guide on the camshaft sprocket was this correct |

See how the cam gear is dowelled in the E hole.... Pretty sure you should use the E timing mark. Suzuki use the same gear on the twin cam GTi which uses the I mark. |

so should i use the i or e because when searching the net it comes up with different looking cam gears for the vitara, but because i have that cam gear should i be using the i like the gti? |

why not just rip the rocker cover off and check for yourself? The rockers should have slight movement in them when the valves are seated ie TDC firing stroke. This will tell you whether to use either the I or E marking. |

err its not the I mark !!! want33's is on the money , its the E mark . like someone else said you use the mark on the outside that is opposite where the dowel on the inside is . on twin cam engines it is dowelled on the intake cam on the I and exhaust cam on the E , on sohc 16 valve engines it is dowelled on the E , this is because its the exhaust stroke of number 1 cylinder , its actually the firing stroke of number 4 cyl ... |

got it going thanks for the advice on timing it off #4, the problem was and still is when i removed the distributor to help with removing the engine i didn't mark it, as in the honda's i have worked on they only locate in one position. so now after stuffing around for a couple of hours trying new pos i got it going but its running rough and to advanced. just need to stuff around trying to get it right now. one final question though when using the timing light should i be using #! or#4 spark lead? again thanks for getting me to this point |
