Post subject:  G13ba timing

Hey Guys,
Almost got my g13ba engine back together but Im having trouble with the timing. I lined up the crankshaft pully with the white notch all ok, checked to see if piston was at TDC and it was. The part Im confused about is the camshaft pully, it had two marks one was a raised circular mark and one was a white notch. I looked at the valve sequence and worked out that the circular mark one was the correct one, but after putting it all back together it wouldn't start. Does anyone have a picture of the timing belt all set up on their car it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again guys.

name your name thread properly so people know WTF is going on

the crank pulley keyway points straight up, the cam pulley keyway points straight down
when it points down there will be a mark on the edge of the cam pulley they lines up with a similar mark on teh cover behind it

the dizzy will need to be pointing at CYLINDER FOUR not one.

there are also 2 ways the cam pulley can go on if you removed it, marked E and I, one is right, the other it wont start or will only jsut idle, I cant remember which is which so youll need to try and see or search

Ok, here's the deal.

When the two marks are facing up at 12 o'clock cylinder #4 is at top dead center and ready to fire.

If you line the marks up with the crank pointing to the mark at 12'o clock, and the cam pointing down at 6 o'clock then cylinder #1 is at top dead center. I know it seems backwards, but this is how the 1.3/1.6-8 valves are setup.

One of the manuals that the parts stores sell is actually wrong about this, and if you follow their directions the timing will be 180° off.

So line both marks up with their notches pointing up, pull the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to #4.

It can be really confusing, because #1 and #4 pistons hit TDC at the same time, However #1 will be on the exhaust stroke, while #4 will be TDC on the compression stroke.

I hope that helps :D

Samboy:
Go to your first post and click the EDIT button.
Rename the thread to something like "G13BA timing" or "1.3 timing" etc.. so other users may find it in a search.

It is always a good idea to "Be sure brain is engaged before operating mouth".
