just wondering if there's a proper way of undoing the top, obviously you undo the centre bolt but the strut shaft turns while undoing the bolt so wont come loose. you need to use a huge spanner on the plate under the bolt but i dont think theres a spanner that big. or i could use vise type multi-grips on the shaft but could damage it

It was suggested to use a rattle gun but i don't have one.

Had that problem myself :)
Drop the whole strut top out instead (the 3 smaller nuts). Then put the big plate in a vice or similar so you can undo the strut nut.

If I recall correctly I put a pipe wrench on that plate.

looks like it's been body lifted going by how far inside the sheet metal the strut top is & that would make it hard to get anything onto it.

the lack of strut brace & the cut lines on the body work are a big give away.

you grip the big nut with vice grips and then you use a GOOD impact driver and it will come undone easy.
