My Swift just threw a CEL on the drive home tonight - before I take it into the dealership, does anyone here know how to get the codes without the special diagnostic tool?

I want to know if its ok to keep driving it or not...

Also, whatever is causing the light, should be covered under warranty, right?

CAT usually does this. Its probably run its coarse and due for replacement. But the only REAL way to know is to chuck the scan tool on. If its the cat, o2 sensor etc it will probably be listed as a servicable part, and not covered by warranty.

The Cat is welded into the headers, and part of the header assembly, so if it DOES turn out to be this, get a price on having the cat insert changed by an exhaust shop before you let suzuki talk you into a new manifold.

Is it a generic scan tool or a Suzuki specific one? I.e. can my mate up the road do it, or does it need to go to a dealership to get the code?

Surely after 2.5 years and under 40,000km the cat or o2 sensors shouldn't be failing...?

Cats are only warranted for 2years. Most manufacturers only give 12 months. Quality of fuel, usage and environment can all alter the life of a cat converter. Same with O2 sensor.

Last I checked you can use a generic scan tool, but it needs the suzuki software. And still, it may not show everything.

Any generic scan tool can read late model suzuki's they run generic codes.

Most common for swift sport check lights coming on is a code in EGR system, have replaced a couple of them followed by O2 sensors then Cat converters so don't just jump to any conclusion, get it checked properly.

So, apparently:

"Found code p0420 in history and fault not present at time of tests, cleared code and road tested fault did not return"

Something to do with emissions, apparently, but nothing wrong with any component, and it went away by itself... The guy reckoned it may have been a bit of bad/stale fuel or something... We shall see...

The code should indicate which part of the EGR system is in error. Good to see he tested the offending sensor before sending you on your way

Not sure if thats true or not, but i'd wager the super genuis' at suzuki didn't put a code in the ECU named 'miscellanoeus'
