Check out the name on that picture. "ATV" winch.
Save up a little longer and get a 6000lb at least.

the only reason i was going 4000lb was because it may never get used
it is mainly as a last resort or if im by myself and i manage to get stuck
i was thinking something like this

If thats the thought process you are using, then just buy a hand winch and save some money.

If it's a last resort then you're going to be stuck bad. There is no point in running a winch that won't be dependable.

Actually that is not really the case, 99% of the time that you are stuck you are not stuck bad and it only needs a little bit to get you moving again. 4000 is probably a bit small but is has to be better than no winch at all, in the end if it gets you out of trouble it is better than walking away.

If we are going to be imagining stuff why not go all the way - Imagine if you were stuck so bad that a 9000lb wouldn't get you out..

or imagine if you had an LJ and so you just never got stuck..

dont waste your time with anything smaller than 6000lbs in a winch and make sure its series wound motor
the 6000 below will lift my whole car off the ground, where as a mate bought an atv stlye winch that cooked itself the first time it ever got used for a half serious recovery
http://tigerz11.com.au/products/GRANDE- ... EEMA-.html
or if your too tight for the above

So much false economy here. Spending $400 on a winch that is unlikely to be to pull you out when you really need it= fail
spending days and $$$ building a winch bar to take a winch that can't pull you out=fail
Finding out that the winch bar you've made won't fit a 6000lb winch: priceless - 4000lb winches generally don't have the 10X4.5" mounting pattern of 6K an up winches, so you have to build something to take them.

I disagree that a 4000lb winch is "better than nothing" a winch that's too small can be dangerous for the brake and long-pull reasons I outlined before. Part of the problem with electric winches is that once you have one you drive differently - you assess an obstacle based on your ability to winch out of it rather than trying to avoid getting stuck. I know this from personal experience from many years ago. Doing this with a winch that's too small to do the job if you are fairly stuck isn't ideal.

poor man pays twice, learnt the hard way. just save a bit more and get the right thing regardless of your intensions. Kinda like buying a 1 tonne "d" shackle.

i dont understand.
whats the point of getting it if you cant get out of a bog hole with it? and if you have tried everything and the winch is a last resort, you would want it to be a good last resort, not something designed for a quad bike.
either get a hand winch or a decent winch.

What's your point?

I'm still an apprentice, and i have built my whole car of apprentice wages. Just save up for another 2-3weeks until you can afford the better product. That's what i have had to do for my whole build.

Don't wheel by yourself for a couple of weeks then and save for the bigger one?
I'd rather not need it and have it, than need it and not have it.

Save your money for a bit longer and get atleast a 6000 if its your last resort you are obviously pretty stuck so you want to know it will do the job and alot of guys on here have built cars on apprentice wages it all just means you have to save and wait for items until you can afford them.
