| Post subject: | Best way to remove the top nut on my front struts??? |
Hi all, In the middle of trying to install my dobinsons lift and Im having trouble removing the nut on top of the front struts. whats the best way to go about it? I removed the whole strut from the car and then put it all back together because i thought it would be impossible to take off whilst out of the car. so after i put it all bacvk together, wheels on, car on ground as per normal, i had another crack but it still twists with the rubber when i apply force to undo it. hope you can help, Mark. |

A rattle gun usually spins them off. In rare cases you may have to clamp the shaft with vise grips or similar. This is a last resort as it does damage the strut insert. |

Are there two nuts locked together? I've always just rattled them off no problems |

Unless someone's done something odd to them before now it'll be one nut, but it'll be good and seized. I trashed a mount trying to get mine off the first time. I take it there's no thread showing through the top of the nut so you can't get a shifter onto the squared section at the top? Usual tricks like soaking with WD-40 or Inox for a few hours will help, a few cycles of heating and cooling might make a difference (didn't for mine, but you never know...) or targetted application of a BFH might shake things loose. As a last resort I ended up having to put a cutting disc down through the shaft and cutting the nut in half, and still had to hammer the fragments off. If you're not keeping the old struts it doesn't matter if they get destroyed in the process. |

DarkHorse wrote: Unless someone's done something odd to them before now it'll be one nut It's quite common to find two nuts locked together on top of shocks, stops them coming undone. Nyloc nuts are also used |

rattle gun worked a treat:) anyone know how to install the camber bolts? they have a small tabbed washer but i have no recess for the tab to slot into to allow the washer to fit flush against the strut :S |

The tab helps stop the camber bolt from moving. It will fit, as the camber bolt shaft is offset |
