Post subject:  Play in the rear diff and loud whining noise?
So when I bought my coily back in 2008, it was doing this weird thing where I let the clutch out and it didn't do anything for a fraction of a second and then there was a loud CLUNK and off we go.. I got underneath the car and it turns out that there is quite a bit of play in the rear driveshaft / diff.. The drive shaft turns about half a rotation before the diff actually engages and the wheels start to turn.. What would cause this? is it fixable or should I just try and find a new rear diff?

Also, its always made a whining noise under acceleration.. It used to be only when it was under acceleration but lately its been getting louder and happening even in neurtal while i'm just rolling along.. but then it gets quiet again?

I'm confused :? :oops: :oops:

Any help or ideas would be sweet :)

Probably fixable by getting the diff rebuilt by a diff shop...

Yep. Sounds like your rear diff centre is toast.

Depending how long you have been driving it like this... I would say you will need a new CW&P at the very least.

When this happened to me it was infact twisted axles, and the diff was perfectly fine.
