As the other thread with the information on this topic got messed up - here is what was that thread was about.

Cheap and easy gearing optoin for a VVT jimny

If you have a manual VVT jimny and would like lower gearing to correct for larger tyre's there is a easy way of doing that. Simply swap the manual VVT transfer case for a auto VVT transfer case. This will give you a 22% reduction in high range and 33% lower low range. With 31's and a auto t-case the car will rev at about 4200rpm @ 100KPH.

Everything is a straight swap out - no need to change drive shaft's, wiring or mount's. It's all plug and play :D

Transfer case cost $850(can vary depending where you get the case from) - By far the cheapest gearing optoin for a VVT jimny.

Hope this helps someone!

Monley.

I disagree with your ratios. According to all the info I have seen...
VVT Manual T-case High - 1:1, Low - 2:1
VVT Auto T-case High - 1.32:1, Low - 2.64
Which makes the auto case exactly 32% lower in high and low.

Do you have any documentation or practical test results that differ to mine?

Yes! I driven the car/ been in the car with the auto case! It revs slightly higher (200rpm) more than what my jim with 20% trail jimny gear's use to on 31's. It has also been done many time's in the UK - Your figures must be worng. Can't argue with practical result's.

I'm getting quoted this price too from wreckers that have been cheap for me in the past. Kinda pricey considering a whole engine is about the same price! I guess this part must be rarer.

I think Drew estimated about 25% lower in high range I think if I can remember rightly. He was just turning the input shafts and counting the turn on the output shaft with the two transfer cases - so not an exact figure, but kinda agrees with monley on this one I think. I'm really keen to get this mod done. My jimny is a town car most of the time, so lowering the ratios isn't going to hurt my economy in the slightest except on a long journey which doesn't happen very often, so I'm going to be loving this one.

I just did a rotation test while on stands. In high, the output shaft went just past 5 turns after 4 turns of the input. I'd calculate this to be about 27%. Interesting. The specs on paper, wrong again!

I take it not suited for 235's then.. ?

235 what size? I have 7.50R16 which is near enough to the same as 235/75/16. ~32" up from 235/75/15 ~29". So so for 32, no way for 29's unless you are ok driving a tractor on the highway.

Nup! It's fine with 235/75 R15  4300rpm @ 100kph (awesome combo with a m18a :P )

Mine sits on 4000. Its ok for short runs but I reckon if I did any long hauls I'd soon get sick of it. And at 4,300, even more so.

There's a few jimny's in VIC that do 4700 @ 100kph and apparently they can quite happily sit on that all day...

Post subject:  Re: Easy VVT jimny gearing option

4000 is nothing for a Jimny engine. Mine sits at 3800 @ 100. That's with 30's though.

Post subject:  Re: Easy VVT jimny gearing option

Just had another look at that spec sheet. It has to be wrong as we never got 3.9's diff's on our jimny's here in AUS that i'm aware of. Anyone shed some light on this?

I asked a wrecker if he could find me one and later that day he said that he could not find one cos they dont exist here in Aus.... apparantly

Yeah could be UK only. Some of that data was from a UK site as I couldn't find any difinitive info for Australian Jims.

4.09 diffs would go well with this swap.

Post subject:  Re: Easy VVT jimny gearing option

Well... How about that. I just counted the teeth of the drive and driven gears in the auto case I have.

Drive - 26 teeth
Driven - 33 teeth.

This equals a reduction of 26.9% Shall we say 27%.

Post subject:  Re: Easy VVT jimny gearing option

I have procurred a couple of manual VVT boxes and am looking to gear one.

My options.... (and my opinions)
Trialjimny 20% High/Low $1240(inc shipping) - 27's High-ok/Low-great. 29's High-great/Low-great. 32's High-good/Low-a little better
Trialjimny 27% High/Low $1240(inc shipping) - 27's High-a bit too low/Low-fantastic. 29's High-very good/Low-fantastic. 32's High-good/Low-ok
Trialjimny 35% High/Low $1600(inc shipping) - 27's High-impossible/Low-fantastic. 29's High-too low/Low-fantastic. 32's High-a bit too low/Low-fantastic
Putting a VVT auto box is equivalent to doing the 27% TJ kit here.

APIO 0% Hi/58% Lo ~$2000(shipping unknown) 27's High-good/Low-fantastic. 29's High-ok/Low-fantastic. 32's High-terrible/Low-fantastic
These are designed for Japanese models and more info needed to confirm for Australian models.

ProStaff 15% High/Low reduction $1090(shipping unknown)27's High-a bit low/Low-great. 29's High-good/Low-good. 32's High-good/Low-a little better
ProStaff 15% High/104% Low reduction $1655(shipping unknown)27's High-a bit low/Low-super fantastic. 29's High-good/Low-super fantastic. 32's High-a little better/Low-super fantastic
ProStaff 0% High/77% Low reduction $884(shipping unknown)27's High-good/Low-super fantastic. 29's High-ok/Low-super fantastic. 32's High-terrible/Low-superfantastic
These are designed for Japanese models and more info needed to confirm for Australian models.

My opinions of HIGH are based on not wanting to rev over 4,000 at highway speeds. I understand they will handle it, but its hell noisy.

My pick would be the Prostaff 15/104. Good compromise for use of 29's and 32's on road and fantastic for any size off road.
You can install a TJ kit and an APIO kit together. This will give (say 27%) High-27%/Low-Not sure (ALOT ~27x58 maybe?) = ALOT

I would like to point out tha the chain in the manual VVT case is 5mm wider than that in the auto VVT case. This makes the manual case a better candidate to gear for longevity.

EDIT: I have alseo seen ZEAL gearsets, and I think they are the same ratios as or perhaps are the same product as ProStaff.

This discussion is about the VVT (M13AA/MKIII) jimnys. The MK1 (G13BB) and MKII(M13A) have completely different gearbox and transfer case ratios. For one, Low is not double High. Gearsets are not compatible.

Hello everyone, I´m new member from Spain

Apio58 kit only works with manual transfer of Jimnys with G133BB engines and it very very expensive.
I have installed Protrack kit in my Jimny, is similar to Apio ones with -60% only on low range
I know a person of my country that he installed a Samurai/Sierra 4.16 transfer in a VVT Jimny with front and rear differentials of a Jimny 1.5 ddis Renault 86hp engine with 3.416:1 ratio, 25% more than VVT ones, and it works OK with 235/75/15 tires.
I read on german Jimny forum some users using Zeal gearsets kits from Japan in electronic Jimny transfers successfully.

Hi swb_dds and welcome to the forum and thankyou for replying.

Please tell us more about the Zeal and Protrack gearsets. Such as, what specific box they are for, woukd they suit Australian Jimnys, what ratios in High and Low, cost and how amd where we would source them from.

My ideal gearset for my manual VVT (1:1/2:1) would be - High-15~20%. Low >>30%.

Protrack has 2 different gearsets kits types for Jimny with manual transfer, one similar to Trial Jimny ones and their famous -24% on hi and low ranges kit, but you can buy them with -7% and -15% too.
The other kit is for change stock planetary gear, similar to Apio kit, with -60% only for low range. Both kits are compatible.
