Post subject:  Sierra Horn Stopped Working

Hey guys, any ideas? I thought it was just dirty contacts behind the cover thingo, but after giving it a good clean up i've still got nothing... figured i might as well just ask rather than spending ages trying to work out whats going on... last weekend is when it stopped working - i went to toot twice, worked once then had nothing since.

Thoughts??

i didnt think the horn had a fuse??? does it?

Spose i'll pull the steering wheel off tomorrow and see what i can see.

as for yelling out, doesnt work =) and with WA drivers being as shit as they are you frequently need to let them know you're there when they try to cut you off!

If you hold the horn depressed and turn the wheel does it work?

Just gave that a try... nope, nothing. Even turned IGN on just in case (and to release the steering lock).

Have you tried taking the steering wheel off and earthing the copper rod that sticks out of the combo switch bit?

If the horn sounds when this happens then i'd say it's worn down too far. You could try soldering a bit on the end.

Also, check your steering column is earthed - there is a spring in the rag joint next to the steering box for this.

I ran a wire around, temporarily,
stayed that way for years.

Its just that the rubber can't conduct current.

Those stock electric horns dont like mud and water in them, the actual horn may be dead... time to get rid of the electric horn, and get some air horns fitted... :D

I moved my Vitara horn to up high on firewall, because it stopped working full of mud.
A good fush and some wd40 got it working.
So Yes, that is worth a look at.

I may have ahorn left over from my Sierra, if thats the issue.

alrighty... steering wheel all cleaned up and contacts all good... no dice.

so i unplugged the horn's crimp plugs and ran a wire from one to the battery, and a wire from the other to various metal on the body and chassis (and vice versa in case polarity matters) and the horn still didnt go off... so im guessing the horn itself has shat it - im guessing what i've done is a good enough test to confirm that???

I've even taken the horn out and tried to wire it to the battery that way and its still not working.

Rag joint on the steering looks fine, although dirty... everything has been hit with inox.

inox up the throat of the horn may work.
After WD40 I had to retune mine before it worked well.
Theres a screw lock nut thingy on them.
Or new ones ain't much.

Twin air horns off barina, astra and vectra are good. Cost $10 from wreckers.

personally run one of these..Straight off the standard horn plugs... Its pretty damn loud and alot less F-ing around and compact than the 3 tube airhorns and such..

hahah i looked at those nautilus ones a while back... they look INSANE - but way too expensive for me. That said, that's the cheapest i've seen one... most were closer to $100.
