Grinder. Put a slice down it and pry it off. The boot will slide it off though.

It's a tight fit but they come off. Let the rubber invert if that makes sense?

Post subject:  Re: How does this thing come off???

well the rubber wont even go past the tiniest little lip on the shaft, its pretty stiff, cant see it stretching AT ALL.

have these been cut off before?

Never cut any of the ones I have taken off.

it has to come off somehow or the metal clip and spring cant be replaced ever.

are you talking about the rubber? or the solid black thing in the pic?

Post subject:  Re: How does this thing come off???

the solid black thing (shifter) is rubber filled & bonded to the shifter shaft for NVH dampening

so i cant get it off then. I need to heat the shaft up but im worried about destroying the boot.

The boot WILL come off. Pull harder, it won't rip.

The boot slides over the thick black bit. To replace the spring, you cut the old one off, and slide the new one down over the thick black section. It will take some force. If you aren't sure, try and slide the new one on before you cut the old one off.

The locking collar stays.

okay im just leaving it as is for now, im goin crazy on it and i think im just making it worse for later. tried using 3 small screwdrivers to lever it off too. it seems to handle a bit of heat ok, so ill see what happens

Turn the boot inside out then pull it offs

When I heated mine to bend it after a body lift, I wrapped a wet rag around the hollow part with the rubber insert to stop it burning. This worked ok. I assume you are heating the stick after a B/L??

had another go this morning, the boot aint coming off without destroying it. but its withstanding the blowtorch nicely anyway. so ill just keep at it.

its not for a bodylift, just did an sj case swap.

NT transfer shifters don't have the rubber in the stick.
May be easier to use one of them.

Get the welder out!

How bloody much were you trying to bend the thing?

I bent a gearstick enough to make it work with a BL with a near empty gas bottle, a hammer and a block of wood and had no dramas, you must have been going pretty bloody hard!
