Has anyone replaced their 2.5l V6 sump gasket ?

Easy to do while engine is in the car or not ?

There isn't a gasket - its just sealant all the way round - both the upper and lower sections. I think its possible in car - although it requires diff removal at a minimum....

Had a feeling that might be the situation.

In that case, is the front diff removal easy, do the drive shafts come off easily without having to pull the front suspension apart ?

RHS will need to have the knuckle etc removed from the ball joint to be able to remove the RHS CV from the diff, LHS will just unbolt from the driveshaft flange

Just found some info in a manual which reckons that you can remove the RHS CV from the diff by using 2 large screwdrivers (after removing all other mounts & un-boltable drive couplings, diff needs to be supported on a jack), - anyone done it this way or is it a real B%^$@ unless done without taking RHS suspension apart as mentioned above ?

Is there a commercially available Sealant that is equivalent to 99000-31150 for the sump flange ?

Its possible - but that CV doesn't always like to budge.... When I pulled the diff to take the engine out - ended up unbolting it from the hub and removing the axle still attatched the the Diff. Then of course on the bench it took 2 goes and it popped out....

Best sealant is the Suzuki stuff - or the 3Bond Grey sealant - Bursons in QLD stock it....

Do you want to remove the drives side cv joint only or the whole drive shaft? If it's the whole drive shaft then yes, you pretty much have to remove the front suspension to get it out.

You'll need to undo the bottom ball joint, and the strut to be able to get the shaft out.

Is the sump gasket definetely leaking? Not the rear main or rocker covers that are very common on these motors.

Re : removing diff, hopefully I'd just be removing the diff and not needing to pull the driveshaft out, doesn't look like anyones done it that way tho ??

Re : sump leaking, For a while I was scared it might be the main bearing section leaking (from side of block), but after a degrease and re-run, it looks like the main bearing to block flange is dry, but the main bearing to sump flange is leaking, front left side of sump, just in front of the left side engine mount (below the main bearing section). Tried nipping up the sump bolts, they were reasonably tight tho, so didn't stop the leak.

The rear main and front main seal may have a slight seepage, but not as large a problem as the sump at present. Had the LH rocker cover and cam seal replaced recently, no sign of leakage from them now.

Thanks for all your input fellas, one of those jobs I'm not looking forward to.

You 100% sure its not coming from the timing chain cover? Thats where mine was coming from.... up behind the P/S Pump where the head joins the block. It runs down the block, along the upper crankcase, and down over the diff/steering rack and blew back all over everything behind. I wasn't able to pinpoint where it was coming from the first time - ended up pulling the engine as I needed to do the clutch as well (changed the tensioners etc at the same time) but it started leaking again recently and when I pulled the P/S pump etc off you can see the path of the leak running back and down from the timing cover....

Thanks, will do another degrease and inspection to be certain.

I know with my 1990 vit, I can get the diff out pretty quick without undoing any suspension, which allowed me to reseal my sump within 1 1/2 hours (first time doing it) but of course much easier when you have access to a hoist

Did a couple more degrease / inspections today, bugger !

Looks like it is the main bearing to block flange that is leaking (pic attached), any thoughts as to the best action ?

The amount of oil here is from 10 minutes driving, it's not dripping out, but isn't as slow as you'd want to ignore it either.....

I could probably degrease every week and keep the oil level topped up, but do you think it will eventually blow a BIG leak (or is that a really small possibility) ?

Q1. Has anybody used a stop leak oil additive with success ?

Q2. Has anybody actually wrecked their motor by using a seal swelling oil additive (not a thickener type oil additive) ?

Mine slowly got worse with age.... I tried to ignore it by degreasing every time I washed the car for a little while, but it didn't fix itself
Although it was never a huge leak, it always left drops on the ground after being parked every night. It doesn't get better no matter how long you wait..... haha
