Post subject:  How can I waterproof a leaking fibreglass hardtop? 94 Sierra

Hi guys,

I have a 1994 WT Sierra with a 2 piece fibreglass hard top - 1 easily removable roof above the front seats, the rest is all bolted down.

Unfortunately there seems to be a bit of a leak in it somewhere - even after just a little bit of rain there is always an inch or two at my feet, and dampness behind the driver's seat on the floor.

Would it be possible to seal/waterproof this roof somehow? I don't think it is coming in from the 'front' roof, I suspect it is coming in through the back section somewhere. I was considering taking off the back section and running a bead of silicon all around the meeting faces of the body but thought I should seek some advice before doing so...

Cheers,

KD.

there is a retarded piece of trim on the B pillar that lets water through.
I tore it off and with some new seals all round the fibreglass edging it conformed to the panel pretty well.
I can't remember the profile exactgly but you should have a look at this link, http://www.ozautomoulds.com.au/catalog_ ... rodID=2161

I have a flexiglass top on mine and have spent a long time tracking down leaks. I found that the joins between the b pillars along the roof can let in a bit of water but a bit of silicon will fix that. I still have water wetting the drivers seat belt with no visible sign of water leaking in the interior - got me stumped. Definitely look at replacing the seals if they are old, Clark Rubber should have what you need. Its just one of those things you will need to keep adjusting and making small changes to, until you have it completely waterproof. Still beats a canvas soft top any day :D

clark rubber wanted like 12 bucks per meter for the trim, this aus auto molds place was 3 dollars a meter for the same thing.

the plastic bit of trim is the 4 x 7 inch piece of ribbed plastic which is a stupid design idea.

have we got a thread with all the different types of tops available with images!?? like flexiglass front and rear with pics.. OME front n rear with pics etc!??

Iv got a suzuki 5 piece rear.. but unsure of what the front section I have is.. :/ just wondering as images make for EASY identification etc for if someone is selling or looking for fitting hardware etc.. (currently chasing hardware to fit front section)

Happy to provide pics as required.. (none of the front RIGHT NOW.. to dark.. but can arrange tomorrow..)

New seals it is then! Should I just take the old ones off and take them into Clark Rubber?

Brodie, where exactly did you run the silicon? On both sides of the new seal or just one?

Cheers,

KD.

I'd advise against going to Clark rubber, they always seem shitloads more expensive than other places. Look up rubber extrusion places in your area. Take your old ones with you. :)

Fair point Hayden, it does pay to shop around.

KD - I didn't run the silicon around the seals, I meant the joins in the body work along the top of the B pillar. Have a look at the photos below (excuse the quality - only had my phone and not a lot of time).

So here is the place I am talking about, along the top here, on either side are the joins.

There are two of those joins, one on either side. Found out the hard way a fair bit of water seeps in through there.

I did this, from the top (outside):

And from the inside:

Doesn't look fantastic and probably isn't the best thing to be doing, but the silicone comes off easily and has stopped most of the water!
