Post subject:  Jimny with sierra transfer gear reduction

Thought i would start a thread as i cant find the info im looking for.

I have a 2004 jimny with 30" tyres and im going to install a W/T transfer using the Offroad Armoury kit. What I want to know is what sort of reduction will i get with the std W/T transfer.

I was looking at getting some of these gears but idk if they will be ok with the std jimny gearbox and diff ratios.

http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/suzuki/samurai/transfer-case/4-16-1-tcase-gears.html

any help would be great.

i like slow rock crawling, so 4.16 ain't low enough for me, but do do a good job on the highway. 4050-4100rpm @ 100kms on 235s.

Correct me if i am wrong........
Providing you have 4.09 diff gears and a transfer ratio of 1.32:1 in high and 2.145:1 in low (I believe you do), you will get exactly 6.7% reduction from the case and 5.734% in low from the W/T case. when you get gears just get the 4.16 gears ;) that will give you 19.7 % reduction in high and 93.939% reduction in low, perfect for 31" tyres cos that is 19.2% bigger. 30 is 15.4% bigger than the standard 26" tyres. I have been looking into this exact thing today. :)

im not sure if your right or wrong but thats the sorta info im after. guess there would be nothing wrong with getting the 4.16 gears except it might be a bit high in high range

There's the option of 4.9's ;)

Post subject:  Re: Jimny with sierra transfer gear reduction

think 4.9 would be to much high range reduction, would be awesome off road tho

Dunno about the %'s for the gears etc, but 30's are 14.07% difference and 31's are 17.79% :)

Post subject:  Re: Jimny with sierra transfer gear reduction

True, i forgot that 205/70 R15 = 26.3 i just did 26 :/

Fixed:
So, here are my calculations for a jim with 4.09 diff gears and a transfer ratio of 1.32:1 in high and 2.145:1 in low.
Correct me if i am wrong again........

TYRE SIZE - PERCENTAGE INCREASE
30" - 14.068%
31" - 17.871%
32" - 21.673%
33" - 25.475%

LOW/HIGH RATIO - RATIO PERCENTAGE INCREASE ("Reduction")
4.16/1.58 - 93.9/19.7%
4.9/1.635 - 128.438/23.864%
5.14/1.667 - 139.627/26.288%
6.4/1.649 - 198.368/24.9%
6.5/1.692 - 203.03/28.182%

Can't in a Jimny

If a jimny locker can be modded to fit a Coily.. Why can't a jimny centre work with Coily gears?
Cut and shut some gear sets.

Look out side the box, or handle the fact you'll have To go 5kms slower on the freeway.

You have got me thinking though............ 3.9's would be good with 6.4's and 32"................ more and more mods.

I think 4.16 will be perfect. Highway will be almost perfect and low will be much lower than what you have now.

There's a pedal in the middle. It slows your car down.

Jimny front is High Pinion and therefore completely different teeth meshing than rear. It would take some highly sophisticated (and expensive) machinery to make a new R&P, not to mention CAD design.

If it were easy, it would have ben done by now.

Ok, I may have misunderstood what was being suggested a little. Point remains... Front is High Pinion and hence completely diferent.

He was talking about using a coily 3.9 front diff center as they are 3.9 and are high pinon mount to.

Post subject:  Re: Jimny with sierra transfer gear reduction

I wouldn't have thought it would be done by now because as far as I'm aware only recently have many people been putting Sierra cases in their jimny where you can get big reduction.

If I'm wrong, fine. If not, then you guys have another option to think about.

I used to have series 3 rockhopper gears in my jimny but after destroying them i have installed the trail creeper 6.5:1 gears. I run 31's and find them fantastic. On the highway i sit on just over 4000rpm. The car is mainly used for offroad and the control gained from the gears gives it an awsome ability offroad. It makes it so much safer on those really steep descents you can actually use the accellerator and is great to crawl through rocks with. Look forward to seeing how you get on with your gears.
