Post subject:  LED indicators
Just doin a tail light conversion and im gonna use some slimline LED lights.

Did a dummy wire up and with the stock flasher unit the indicators flash quite fast. I bought a universal LED flasher unit but it is wired differently and just went up in smoke. Wasted $25. What have people done to run their led lights and what flasher unit did you use?

if you find a decent flasher book like the tridon one it will show which pin is power, which is load and which is earth, then just find one with matching power and load pins that doesnt change flash rate with a blown bulb (not strictly legal but with LED's who cares

I'm just throwing out something random from some vague and distant memory but isn't it just a matter of running a resister in line from the flasher unit to the LED's? I think I recall someone mentioning it to me years ago as a fix to reduce the increased flasher rate caused by installing LED's. Might be worth a google.

that works but defeats the purpose of using LED's in the first place. Part from the bling that is.

Tridon have some info on their web site, but since I don't have anything better to do this morning here you go!

The one they list as a replacement for the Sierra is EP34, see diagram...

The closest LED compatible one I could find on their side is the LED04, as follows...

You'd have to earth the little cable on the LED04 seperately but then it would just plug straight into where the old flasher unit is fitted.

Looking at the Narva catalog I can find a replacement for the standard flasher unit (68238BL) but none of their LED flasher units are a direct drop in replacement for the Sierra! Well, that I can find anyway. Hella seems to be the same too.

Just doing some more digging, you should find all the info you need right here.

According to the info I got from the Tridon site, the Sierra flasher unit is the ISO type, but I couldn't find a direct replacement for that from Tridon, Narva or Hella. The JSO type ones are available, so if you swapped those wires around in the mounting block for the flasher unit you could use one of those.

Still, i'm doubtful that NO ONE makes a ISO type LED flasher. I'll post up if I find one.

According to the digging i've done this morning, it will be the JL (CF13JL-02)

EDIT: I am going to get one of these, if anyone in Brisbane wants one let me know by the end of the week and i'll split the postage.

This is what I have done in the past for a quick fix. Worked a treat :D

did some research and the one i need is a narva Part No:68245BL. it Should be a straight swap for the sierra one as it is a combination flasher. it will allow LED and normal globes to be used up to 30w total. will let everyone know if its right.

How did you come to the conclusion that 68245 is the right one? That was one that I looked at and it looked to me like it wasn't right.

First I looked at the Tridon web site, and their recommendation for a direct replacement for the stock flasher unit. The diagram for that is the first one in my first post, with the "+B" (12v from battery or ignition circuit) on the left hand side, "L" (lamps) in the middle/top, and "E" (earth) on the right hand side.

68245 on the other hand is like this:

with the earth on the left hand side, lamps in the middle/top as before, and +12v on the right hand side.

So what does it mean having the polarity reversed? Well that is the question isn't it. I am guessing that the flasher unit itself should be protected internally, most devices are these days. Not knowing what circuitry is like inside the units it's hard to say what would happen, the "flash" circuit may work, but will it distribute +12v from pin 49a?

you cant run em backwards, they are a normal electronic unit inside

there is a tridon road train one that doesnt alter its flash rate, only has 2 pins and matches the sierra socket (long as youplug in the right 2 pins)

its what I used to use before LED became popular :wink:
