Post subject:  Timing belt wont track straight
HI Guys

Well, not quite out of the woods yet, picked up a new timing belt today, fitted it, cranked over the engine a few times but it keeps tracking off to the front of the pulley. This is worrysome.
I pulled it off and put it back on several times but it still keeps tracking off. I don't know if this is acceptable so not sure what to do from here.
Any ideas??

more information, what engine ? what pulley is it coming off ? did you fit your harmonic balancer back on ?

Sorry mate.
Its an 89 Vitara, I have the front cover and all the accessory belts off, have the pulleys off too, now that you mention it maybe the pulleys play some role in keeping the timing belt in place.
Ive just been cranking it over checking everything looks good before I put it all back together, maybe that is where I went wrong???

Yes, the crank pulley helps to keep it on

x2 will also run off with out pulley.

Yep, thanks guys, put the pulley back on and now its sweet.
I had a moment of dread there when I thought I might have bent the end of the crank when muscling the front bolt off but all good now.

you must have bloody big forearms if you think you bent the crank removing the crank bolt :rofl:

But yes the harmonic ballancer also works as a guide for the timing belt :peaceout:

Did you get the bolt done up tight?
