take the coil lead out, put your finger over the end of the coil and turn on the ignition and wind the car over whilst holding the coil....

If the resistor is still hot after this test let us know and we can diagnose the problem

jeebus you got some shit going on there

thats the fuseable link, either its only warm and normal or its hot and you are drawing too much current

What accesories have you got installed? If you are taxing the stock look too heavily you might want to look at putting in an auxilliary fuse box and running your accessories back to there.

ill have a look on sunday when i get a chance i just pulled the amp wire of and started it and it was still getting warm ill trace the wiring down
im only runing the gti motor with four coils and microtech but i was runing all this in my old shell, and it was fine so i think i have squashed a wire in the dash

So that green wire is meant to be there? I removed mine last week, and did away with the plug, going straight to the terminal... problems ahead?

its there to stop a major meltdown should something happen to the loom between the battery and fuse box

Oh tits.

Guess I have to make another one then...

if you dont mind a bit of wiring and mucking around, you can get the fusible link box and terminals for a commodore pretty cheap from Holden, mount it in front of the battery and feed a big cable in, then wire the cars power feed into it and you get much easier to use push in links as well as a few spare slots for high current devices like compressors and spotlights and stuff

heaps neater and more reliable than wires everywhere

found out it was the alternator I unplug that and it dosnt heat up so theres something wrong with the alternator i guess so im going to do the falcon job

Pics? Part number? Price?

Cmon Royce, you're letting the team down!

BTW Bazook, what turbo are you running on that thing? What engine management? Running 4 coils direct sorted out the angle drive problem eh? 8) What are you doing for the ignition pickup?

if its a GTI alternator I am guessing its higher amps that a sierra one, jsut run a fat wire from the alternator to teh battery positive bypassing the fusible link and cut off the stock alternator wire, I would say you are pushing too many amps back in through the link, specially if you are running a big stereo or lights, youll need to do the same with a falcon alternator

Damo, its Holden, they like looking for parts  but lots of other cars have the same box (its the same as the battery one out of a vit that you made the mounts to fit your inner guard)

Can you take a pic and post it?

Post subject:  Re: hot fusable link wire

the reason its not getting hot when the alt isn't changing is cos that wire takes the charge from the alternator and takes it too the battery -
so the fact that that wire gets hot actually means the alternator is working fine.
the heat means that the fusible link is working too hard either by being de-graded from years of use & breaking the internal copper strands or by trying to supply too much current through it.

from what I can find about the gti alternators, they seem to be rated at 60 amps (org sierra 35 or 45amp depending on year), so ditch the old link and put in decent sized wires to a big replacable fuse like royce is talking about...

There's a pic of the one is used in my members thread here. Royce reckons the Holden ones are the same/similar.

HTH.

Thanks Damo -

By the way, I just found out that there is a panel missing under my steering wheel...

No worries!

That panel shouldn't be too hard to come by. I'm trying to think if it's different between WT and NT, but I don't know.
