Can you use “R” resistance rated spark plugs in a 97 Suzuki sierra to limit static radio interference in a uhf cb?
Would moving the uhf power lead more than 20cm away from the distributer help?

Can you use “R” resistance rated spark plugs in a 97 Suzuki sierra to limit static radio interference in a uhf cb? Would moving the uhf power lead more than 20cm away from the distributer help?

First up run the power from somewhere in the cab, cig lighter or something. Secondly, make sure the aerial cable is run as far away from interference causing items as possible. Thirdly, make sure all aerial connections are done properly (soldered well or crimped properly). |

The first thing top do is work out if the interference is getting in through the antenna or the power lead. Disconnect the antenna and see if it goes away. If it is still there with the antenna unplugged then add a filter to the power lead (another trick is to power it from a separate battery although this is not always definitive). You can get a power filter from Jaycar Electronics. If it does go away then it is coming in through the antenna. Make sure the lead is well earthed at both ends (connectors properly attached). Make sure the antenna is properly earthed to the car and also that the radio has a good earth. Then route the lead away from the distibutor, alternator and other noise sources as far as possible. Another trick is to earth the bonnet with a copper flexible braid (also get these from Jaycar) remember that you can shield the cable but the noise can still be picked up by the antenna. You might think about mounting the antenna down the back if there is no other solution. Most of the time the noise is from the power supply and it can be filtered out. You can tell where the noise is coming from ny the sound it makes, A whirring sound it the alternator. A sort of ticking sound is the distributor. |
