i have been offered a silly amount of cash for my ute and after seeing how chop's GV works i think i want one.
what problems if any do they have?
are the autos a good thing? can they tow 1450kg safely?
whats the go with the alloy diff do they all have one?
are there any motor choices? if so what is best

Look out the GV's are taking over.


Gv's came out with 3 different enguines.
SWB softops came with a G16 (98-200)
all other swb came with the J20a
LWB models came with a choice of a J20a or a H25a V6

The autos seem to be very relilable and i dont know of any majour problems with them

However the V6 can suffer from noisy timing chains and lifter noise if not serviced correctly.

All 4cly models come with alloy diffs.
Early V6 autos (98-2001) came with the alloy diff. All manual V6 have the steel diff.

Common issues they can have are the air operated front diff can have issues but is easily fixed by swapping in a Vitara center.
The early ones had a factory recall to fix an issue with the T/case.


When it comes to lifting them the majour limit is your front CV's.

Mine may have converted shep 8O :oops:

My book says all 5 door models 450kg unbraked and 680kg braked but XL7 is bigger at 1350kg braked.

Everything B4T says covers it all. CV's can go in these easier with the extra power, so maybe some spare cv's for one.
And i'm rather bias towards a 2003-04 model with the updated dash/interior, it looks nicer :wink:
My 03 auto has a steel diff up front, 02 and earlier auto's i'm pretty sure are all alloy.

Doubley agree with B4T and Chop on all accounts the timing chain is normally a bit rattley on cold starts but smooths out pretty quickly, Im pretty happy with the towing, not huge but still decent house load on 10x6 trailor and didnt feel it on the end. as for the 03-04 models interior is a bit step up on the pre ones. IMO 03-04 was the GVs prime for comfort, affordabily, off road cred with out having it too family bubbly style

For towing your boat (if ya get an auto) Shep i'd invest in a transmission cooler

I reckon they look great with a bit of lift and some bigger tyres

With the GMV being at 3800kgs id take a guess that braked towing is 1850.

Kerb weight + Tare mass + braked towing = Gross Combined Mass

1405 + 545 + 1850 = 3800

Older style dash is easier to work with if you want to replace the stereo, add a UHF, etc. and a lot less electrickery - newer style dash has the BCM (body control module) which replaces a bunch of individual controllers on the older model - wipers, washers, power windows, power locks turn signals, etc., etc., etc., all controlled by a single box behind the dash.

Not all rattle on start up. Mine used to but not anymore.

To reduce the noise you need to do an oil flush to disolve all the carbon and sludge that builds up in the oil galleries and run a quallity oil. Might take several flushes but once its clean it will reduce chain noise quite alot.

Ive grown used to mine and it now doesnt feel or look tall enough. Might be time for some lifted Front XL7 coils and some alone time in the garage.

my 2.5 man 2 inch lift, bar, 235/70/16 tyres gets
9.8l per 100klm around town
9.25l per 100klm hwy at 110kph
8.04l per 100klm hwy at 85 kph

Can't comment on the 2l auto as I don't ave one (so pointless of posting I know, but I felt left out and wanted to say sumtin) but I do have a 2l manual in a shorty (2004 model) and I recon it's a better choice than a V6 auto.
I like the 2l as it feels much more torky down lower than the V6. Shure rev the V6 and she goes awsome (sounds nice too) but I just recon the 2l is a better overall engine. Be interesting to see how a 2l auto does go.

Fuel consumption wise,
average for our V6 auto lwb= 12l per 100kms. Best so far is 10.3L/100kms
average for our 2l man swb - 10l per 100kms. Best so far is 7.7l/100kms (I shit you not: 34.86liters for 438.8kms. I have NFI how I did it tho)
