Post subject:  Vitara Rear guard chop?

Since fotting my 235/75 muddies i have had a bit of scrubbing on the lip of the rear guards. I have a dobinsons 40mm lift installed with 15mm coil spacers in the front...

The rubbing is cutting into my tyres at the top of the tyre lugs on the sidewall.. so it 'just' doesnt have enough clearance..

I was wondering if i should put my 30mm spacers in the rear instead of chopping the guards? ...and then worry about the back riding higher than thr front later on..
has anyone done this before?

cheers, mark

Putting 30mm spring spacers in the car won't really help. When you flex/bounce off road the tyres will still end up in the same place and get cut anyway.

You need to space the bumpstops. I doubt you'd need 30mm of spacer - I'd start off with 15mm.

In any case, I think it's wise to space the bumpstops the same thickness as any added spring spacing to avoid any possibility of coil bind.

^^ what he said.
Fairly sure I added 30mm bumpstops to alleviate most of my scrubbing issues on my old vitara with 30's. I also hammered the seams a little, I dont remember if that really did much.

Oh, as an aside, it's pointless cutting a guard for such a tiny amount of clearance. If you're going to cut, a vitara rear guard it's the same amount of work to cut a little tiny bit or a whole lot, because the guard still has to be reconnected to the wheel tub. It's actually easier to do this with a larger cut.

For reference (again :deadhorse: ), 33's with no lift. lots of guard cutting and very large bumpstop spacers.

cheers guys, guess I will have a crack at extending the bumpstops then..

so general rule is to extend them the same amount of lift I have added?

so 40mm lift + extend bumpstops by 40mm?

Just had a look at the DIY vitara bump stop thread, will do what Christover has done with the square tubing, looks simple enough:)

a few years back i borrowed a vitara that looked a lot like steve's image above... stock standard, but the owner had a set of 32" tyres laying around and the stock ones were bald.... he butchered the guards with a grinder till they fitted. no bumpstop spacing either... only scraped on the front end if you really bounced it hard (like jumping a kerb at speed)... but with no extended flares or mud flaps it was a no brainer that it got yellow stickered by the cops after i'd been driving it for about 2 months.

point being - for 32" tyres you can pretty much cut the guards on a vitara enough that you don't even need to think about bumpstop spacers =)

-12 offset, hitting the lip would work but then I would have nowhere to mount my flare to.. I'll fab up some bs extensions today and see how that goes
