Post subject:  GV Seatbelts
The belts in the zook don't retarct like they used to, I guess that is to be expected for a 12 and a half year old vehicle... Has anyone had experience either:


A: replacing the front seatbelts in a 99 Grand Vitara (no airbags)

B: Servicing the retracta reel on the existing belts?



What should I watch out for? difficulty rating etc?

I sent mine to a place in WA to have the webbing replaced as it was worn and fraying in one point where the buckle sat all the time (wife getting in and out of the car a lot) - easy enough to remove and replace - just pull the trim off the B Pillar and unbolt. Should be able to pull them out and clean them too - a bucket of washing powder to soak it in then a good clean out can work wonders.

Id unbolt them, and check then. Should be easy to pull out. They could be full off lollies from past soccer mums. Who knows? Rust, fluff etc

My seatbelts don't retract without assistance. My theory is because the cavity behind the panels isn't sealed to the outside as there's dirt that comes thru the vents, I figure the reel are full or dust/dirt.

i was told to use Hair shampoo to wash the belts rather than something harsh like cloths powder by an old chap who's done at least 60+ resto's in his time. his theory was the shampoo leaves your hair smooth & silky so it should work on the belts & it does.

remove the belts, pull them all the way out & put a cable tie around the webbing right down at the reel (some seatbelts will be unusable if they retract fully)

clean the grime build up where the belt slides up on the top pillar mount & on the buckle bit, then gently & thoroughly wash & rinse each belt twice without getting the reels wet.

if that doesn't fix them, get onto Klippan they stock the autoliv range & should have a replacement as they manufacture belts for everyone from memory.

Ill stuff with a lot of things that shouldn't be stuffed with but bugger me its a seatbelt, just chuck it and get a new one they aren't dear

Yep most likely a case of cleaning the mechanism.

try cleaning the grime off the slider part up on the pillar mount where the belt changes direction.


but Royce is right... buy new if you're concerned about your safety.

My seatbelts, although dirty still safely function, ie lock when pulled hard so for me the dirt is more of an inconvenience.
