just installed a new fan clutch on my vit g16b in a sierra, I bought it new from ebay. When I accelerate quickly through the gears it sounds like the fan blades are hitting the shroud but they're not. also when down shifting I get the same grinding noise and vibrations through the car. additionally the engine has stated stalling when putting the clutch in when traveling at speed, like a blocked idle jet but not quite as abrupt and when driving slowly, ie. clutch in and out in 1st, the revs drop abruptly to the point of stalling. I had a thermo fan hooked up for the past two weeks and none of these symptoms existed then. would this fan have come pre-filled with the fan oil? I didn't put any in, thats the only thing I can think of.

quick update. took the shroud off and it still makes the noise and vibrations so it was not hitting the shroud. it did stop stalling though I'm not really sure what this had to do with the shroud, maybe the engine was just cold. I tried fitting the old hub and it made the same noise and I opened the new hub and there is oil in it. now I'm just at a complete loss I feel like someone would have complained about this because its pretty terrible sounding

Is it hitting your lower pulley?

ok so I got the shits and took the fan out.. the noise is still there. the only other thing I did yesterday was install a vl engine mount on the passenger side only. the noise is a rumble/ meshing noise, maybe transfer or gearbox? it only happens when I take my foot off the accelerator and it sort of jerks in hesitation. also when downshifting the same noise occurs along with some big vibrations. any ideas? maybe a uni joint or something

Its not some part of the air intake touching your bonnet is it? The VL mounts make the engine sit taller.

no I don't think so, there is a bit that does touch but its rubber

Take the bonnet off and go for a drive.

nope not it. its definitely drive train related I'm going to take the VL mount out and put the broken sierra mount back in just to make sure this is the problem

It sounds like metal to metal contact in the engine mount.

Can they be fitted 90* out?

Only lifting one side of engine may cause exhaust to touch somewhere?

VL mounts are a bad idea in a Sierra.. I've seen lots of dramas caused by them.

still has the noise with the sierra mount, very odd it wasn't there yesterday morning. it has to be drive train related because it changes with the revs. it only happens when I take my foot off the accelerator in high revs (above 2500). it almost sounds like something rubbing on the wheel. like a shoe on the rubber of a bicycle wheel when its turning.

seizing alternator springs to mind.

Did you adjust fan belt tension.
May be straining water pump or alternator bearings

I thought about that but the alternator has been in for a week with no noise and I drove with the fan off and the noise was still there. I also tried different belt tensions, loosened until the battery light came on.

Are your tyres hitting something when you decelerate,
loose spring plate bolts could allow wheel movement when backing off.

Or any other loose or damaged bits in suspensin etc

uni joints can do funny things when engine positions have changed, even though you put it back.

feel them all, see if any are getting hot

so just took it for a test drive and the noise is gone. I did two things so it could be either. 1. I ground a bit more of the engine mount bracket to give the extractors a bit more room, they are really close 2mm maybe and I figured that when decelerating the engine might tip forward a bit causing them to hit the chassis. if this fixed it im not sure why because it made the sound with the sierra mount as well when it didn't previously 2. I flipped the vl engine mount over so the long piece is on the bottom. this is the way its supposed to go and I didn't do it yesterday. again if this fixed it I'm not sure why. sort of anticlimactic but fingers crossed it doesn't come back

Sorted this one out finally to. You were right christover the extractors are touching the engine mount bracket when I downshift. I'll try to put as much space as I can between but might have to heat them up and just bend the sicko

I love a happy ending

I just discovered an annoying rattle in mine, was only every now and then.
It was a door slightly bent, and not seating properley on its rubber seal.
