I've just joined here guys - great forum. I recently purchased a 1999 Jimny G13BB SOHC 16V, it had heaps of K's on it 250tho. First off started with an overheating issue ended up being a blocked radiator after I did the fan clutch and thermostat first :). The zook ran like a new one heaps of power, zipped around like a beauty! The other week whilst coming off the beach I noticed it "chugging" at idle it had done this prior but I put it down to the overheating/hot issue. A couple of Ks further on I noticed it blowing White/Blue smoke, quite a bit of it. It still drove fine the power was up no diff but I drove it straight home. At idle it chugged and blew heaps of smoke and had used a couple of litres of coolant.

I pulled the head off and low an behold a blown head gasket. Seeing it had 250ks I had the head reconditioned, new valves, seals, guides etc, cleaned off the carbon on the pistons bought a VRS kit and meticulously re-assembled, torqued it up and lovingly kissed it. Well stuff me it started first turn and idled there chugging away again, looking at the tailpipe it was still blowing the same friggn smoke! WTF? I drove it a little and it drove like puss. Did I assume the head gasket when it could have been a cylinder as well? Did the dudes not fix or check my head correctly? Yeah I didn't do a compression test because I could see the faulty gasket, the motor turned over well when I did the timing and I just thought head gasket.

I'll check the compression tomorrow but do any of you guys have any ideas that it could be something else like injectors or something? I'm really not looking forward to pulling it down again to look at the bottom end :(

Was the cylinder head pressure tested?

Hmm, welded up the cat it was leaking previous owner replaced it - old weld was dodgey but the converter looks new.

Did you run a straight edge on the block before assembling. Due to the previous overheating the block may have warped some.

Its a tricky one, the only way coolant can enter the bores is via the headgasket and the only way oil can get there is also via the headgasket and or valve seals, worn rings.

When the overheating was found was the car driven much in this state?

No, I didn't check the block or run a straight edge, that would have made some sense :). Bit of an update since though, I started it today and it still had the same "chugging" but there was no smoke! WTF? Now I'm thinking that the cat converter may have had some coolant still in it and the chugging is a separate issue, least I'm hoping that. So I took it for a drive, it runs crap at idle or low revs but sounds fine a high revs although it's not responsive getting there, quite sluggish off the mark and when coasting at a constant speed (no throttle) jumps around like throttle on and off but only at a constant speed. I drove it for around 10ks at up to 100ks, it's used no water or oil so it looks like it's something else - any further ideas? Cheers

Maybe do a compression test?

Does it rev to redline? Could it be in limp mode? Ie. ya haven't plugged everything back in properly or now you have a faulty sensor? Can you run a diagnostic on it through the diag plug and check for codes

Hey, everyone that responded to this thread thanks. This morning drove it 40ks to the local mechanic and filled him in on the story so far. He listened to the engine and said simply might be running on 3 cylinders. One by one he pulled the injectors leads off and no2 cylinder had no response, promptly pulled the new plug out and stuff me it was in half! I remember getting the socket stuck down there and gave it a little whack to get it out. I couldn't believe i didnt diagnose or even think of that i was too caught up in a bigger picture. Runs like a beauty, I was so relieved Give me a kick in the arse! Thanks again.
