Hey Fellas,

I'm thinking of making a bracket that will bolt on to my spare tyre carrier to carry a 20L Jerry on....

How do you reckon it'd affect the rear door hinges with having the extra weight.

The other option is that I make something for the tow hitch but I don't really wanna have to take it off every time I open the door.

i wouldn't do that the door isn't very strong and you will have a nice saggy door after a wile.

would be better of making a bracket from a towbar or rear bar if you have a steel one.

but remember its illegal in most places to have a fuel jerry can on the rear of a vehicle. (something like that)

x 2. I would not be putting the rear door under any additional stress. I am even worried about the heaviwer spare wheel on mine.

I've often thought about this.
I think that when closed the latch will take a bit of the stress away from the hinges, if you removed the Jerry before opening it would probably survive.

A smaller jerry may be worth considering too.

Looking at the way my spare moves when the door is closed (even though it is attached firmly) I think a lot of the stress is going to be on the points that connect the spare wheel carrier to the door. I have not taken the trim off to see what is behind there but that part worries me more than the hinges. I think you are right Zukenutter that when cloed the three moutning points for the door should make it pretty stable and take some stress off the hinges.

When I had my spare 235/75/15 cooper A
STT on my back door, just the additional weight of the tire and alloy rim, managed to reshape the back door a bit, cracked the paint in a few places.....wouldn't do it!!!

Yeh well my plan was to take the Jerry off before opening the door....

Hmm, righto, think i'll go off the tow hitch then. I suppose if it won't be too hard to take the pin out and slip the hitch out anyways.

I defiantly wouldn't hang a jerry on the back door, I can hear the door vibrating now with only a 235 on it.
Tow hitch would be good, but it wouldn't be that great for off road cause it gets hung up when you leave it in.

Someone will mention soon that carried fuel should not extend past the car... Hang on, I just mentioned it :)

I reckon that most of the vibration is due to spare being bolted through 2 layers of body sheet metal. It's that flex making the door vibrate. Also if the spare does not make contact firmly with the rubber stops it will vibrate even worse.
Some reinforcement on the inside would help.

I have thought about moving the spare to the right and fitting the jerry below VVVV under the door handle. Would only be 8kg
