Post subject:  transfer case shims
Have just finished doing a rebuild on the t/case and its still as noisy as it was before. So after some investigating iv'e noticed the input shaft has some play in it. Now while doing the rebuild i cant remember if there was a shim on the back of the input shaft.

Is it possible to replace these shims without completely dismantling the case?

Where can i get these shims from?

nope. you have to pull the case apart to put shims in. it should have been part of the process of a rebuild. how much play does it have?

did you replace all bearings? what were the gears like, any wear, rust, pitting or chips?
was the rebuild done while fitting a set of crawler gears?
are you using something accurate to measure it? or just going by feel (should be using a dial guage onto the end of the shaft.


you can buy shim material from any bearing shop and just cut it out to suit, alternatively cut up a coke can its perfect for thin aluminium shims,
make sure you check the output shaft too.

the play in the shaft is not gear slack its in /out play. shaft moves in and out about 1mm.

the case already had 5;12 gears in it and we just replaced all the bearings and seals. Berarings were stuffed.it was put back together exactly the way it came apart. no shims were added or removed.


Can shims just be put in behind the circlip?

Mark, that is the funniest advice I have heard in ages. Yes I know where you got the idea.

Techo, Techo Techo then use a coke can. Shit I only drink Pepsi, guess it won't work for me then. (BTW, I don't drink Pepsi, referenced for comical reason only)

I realise its shaft endfloat and not gear backlash your talking about mate, I was asking because if the bearings were completely shagged you could have bad wear on the gears which is causing the noise.

I dont know how you'd go getting the shim in behind the circlip but I guess its worth a try.

NO GREG pepsi cans dont work it has to be coke. whats so funny greg, im not talking about using the ENDS of the can!!! cut the can up and what do you have, thin aluminium sheet, probablly about 4 thou thick. youd need a few too many to get 1mm worth thats B4T needs, he's better off taking a few accurate measurements and getting some shim sheet.

No. Toward the bottom of my "transfer case shims" thread (you didn't do a search did you :P) is a scan from the manual which tells you how to measure your case and determine the shims you need.

And in the tech section is my part numbers list, where I have the SGP part numbers of the shims. Genuine is the only way to go AFAIK.

EDIT: Oh crap, I didn't realise I don't have the input shaft shims on that part number list. I have them at work, i'll post em up tomorrow.

There are different diameter shims for the upper and lower shafts, each come in 0.1mm, 0.3mm and 0.5mm, use any combination as required to pack the bearings.
