Here's one for Royce :D

I've noticed a new noise coming from under the bonnet. Visually things look OK, except for the front pulley. I swear it looks like it has a little runout while the engine is running. I can't get to the pulley very well but I try as best as I can to jiggle it and it seems solid.

So does it make any noise when the pulley is loose? Mine makes a kinda knocking noise, I haven't really heard anything like it before. I'll pull the rad out of it tomorrow and have a look at the pulley.

does it sound like a knocking bearing?

Last time mine was noisy, was real loose but

and now its glued on the seal is leaking :(

It's a knock but didn't sound internal like a bearing does, it sounded like it was outside the engine. I thought this morning it might be bearings in the alternator and got time to have a look. Alas, it was not the alternator :(

So, one or more of the pulley bolts have backed off and been sheared off. 3 were sheared off when I pulled it apart, one came out with assistance and the other was jammed solid ans snapped when I tried to reef the pulley off. SO, let's just slide the crank pully off and replace it! So I got the crank pulley bolt off, bewdy, on the home stretch now. Hmm, that pulley won't budge. Hmm is that red loctite I spy in there??? I think I maye have been a little liberal with the loctite on the crank pully bolt and some dribbled down inside and stuck the crank pulley to the taper. Sit down and have a coffee time...

My options are, try to remove the pulley or drill the pulley in situ and tap for new bolts. I think i'm going to try to make a puller to remove the pulley. Wish me luck, because i'm going to bloody well need it!

PS, actually another option is to weld the pulley on but you would have to be pretty dumb to do something like that hay Royce :mrgreen:

I'd be getting that pulley off, whatever it took. Doesn't matter if you damage it, just replace it

i believe using an alloy block is good rustproofing :)

x2 Can't use a conventional 3 prong around the outside of it? If it snaps it then at least it will be off, I would be replacing that pulley wouldn't be worth the effort of getting the bolts out. If it doesn't come overly easy, which I suspect it wont with the amount of loctite on it, then maybe grab some heat.

loctite will go soft at pretty low temp, like heat it up temps not set fire to the car temps

jam some levers in behind it and wiggle it off, youll wreck the seal but once it moves it will keep moving

Yeah the rustproofing is working nicely :D that seal has been weeping for a while, but i've not had any reason to pull out the rad and timing belt... until now!

FYI there is now way you're going to get any standard sort of puller in behind that crank pulley, there is a couple of mm at most. I don't have an oxy or lpg torch so heat was not an option. I ended up making a puller.

I did have one of the M6x1.0 bolt holes without a bolt snapped off in it to work with. So all I needed was another on the opposite side of the pulley. Out with the drill and 5mm bit and have at it

Fab a puller out of scrap and spare nuts & bolts. It works!

Here's my problem. I put waaay too much Loctite on the crank pulley bolt and the extra wicked its way in between the pulley and the crank my capilliary action. It wasn't going anywhere in a hurry!!!

I have to find some new bolts for the bottom pulley now (the micro v-belt one). I was thinking some unbrako cap screws or similar.

Does anyone know the size of that front crank seal BTW???
